When I first started the choices seemed confussing so I called Kristen at Generations glass told him what I wanted to do, how much I would spend and he put together a variety of glass for me. I was very pleased.

What are you going to be making, and how big?

I would start with a sample pack of colors from one of the companies. I like going with Northstar or Glass Alchemy because they have a large selection. Then you can figure out what you will need a lot more of. I personnally allways go through Black Violet from GA and Cobalt Blue from NS. So getting a pound of each is what I would do. (but you might wait until after you get a feel for the colors to start buying pounds).

As far as clear goes, it depends on what size torch you have and what you will be making. My first order, I bought a case of 11 mm rod . And It was awesome to have that much laying around to use on everything. Then a mix of small rod like 5 or 6 mm is nice to have. If your going to be going big, get some bigger rod like 16-25mm.

Are you going to be using tubing? Get some 10mm for blow tubes if you plan on using them. Some 25mm, 28mm, and 32mm is nice to have. It all just depends, I would just get a variaty of stuff until you figure out what you like. If you get more specific in what you want to do, it will be easier to tell you what you might need.

But, if you are just beginning, I probably wouldn't get the big rods or the big tubes yet, until you get more comfortable behind the torch.

Small vessels, but you can do it. Just get abunch of dif sizes and see what works for you. I would not bother with getting anything too big though. the lynx is badass compared to anything its size,IMO. You need to be realistic about how big you can actually go on this torch, for starting up it is the shit.

The sample packs are always a good idea.... you don't get much of each color but enough to know if you like it or not. Obviously your on the internet so why don't you go to northstars website and view the color descriptions / pics...... Ask yourself what colors do you like in general not necessarily glass

Starting out striking colors may be discouraging until you understand flame chemistry a little better, to understand these colors a little better maybe try some of ns's ruby it's cheap it strikes and it works like butter and if all else fails you can kiln strike it...... being on a GTT you should get good results with these colors....... on my SSQ i've never gotten the spectrum of colors out of bluemoon that my friend has on his GTT

Dichroic alchemy has alot more striking colors in thier pallette than northstar does....

what ever your choice goodluck... nad we hope to see some pics in the future

I've been at it for 9years and I still bang my head a little when oredering. Not because I don't know what to get, but becasue I can't get it all at once.

My advice: Order what you can afford . Don't try and order everything you think you may want. (chances are you can't afford it) You'll be ordering again soon. Spend $300 - $500 on 1/4 pounds of 8 colors and clear rod and tube. I don't suggest the sample pack. 5 inches of a color is just not enough. The colors below are just as good as any. You can get soooo many different results with these.

My suggestions off the top of my head to get you going:
Onyx
star white
amber purple
ruby K
green carnival
silver strike 5
colbalt
green sparkle

4, 6, 10, 15 mill rod: 2 pounds each
9.5, 12.7, 19 hvy tube. 2 pounds each
25 med tube. 2 lengths

avoid some sparkles , and avoid crayon colors (cadniums) read what they ahve on the colors it will help... but take a while to sink in.

frankly i dont think you need to worry about color at all. you have alot of problem just with form. pick up a foot of silver wire. and learn fuming it will pay off and its cheap... they could could probably buy lots of color off yoru first batch.

dont know if you have one but a kiln would be more then helpful.

as for sizes 9.5hw , for blow handles.

i would say get a mix of sizes ... your going to burn up a few tubes any way. just get samplers.
i use 7mm , 9mm , and 10mm rod for handles. and 3/4 inch rod

the main reason i think peeps are so attached to usin 9.5 is its the size for graffix slides and other small slides for tubes i been using 10 mil simax its only .5 millimeter dood i dont think you will notice the female piece one someones toob though it will notice

this one is kinda funny... im on a lynx at the moment not the bigest torch or anything but.. i found if i bump up the tubing size i can control it beter? what do i belive it... ya GTT torches can put out some heat.. i let a friend try it and he said it melted the tube way before he was ready for it. so like everyone else said.. it all depends... id def get a variety
