truth!

i recently ventured into a message board that didn't have to do with glass... only to find over-eager people who jumped down my throat about how i was doing everything wrong... except i wasn't, my methods just didn't line up with their methods -- or they didn't actually read my full post, or dates to prior posts (like from 2009).

In their eyes I had not proven myself to them, and thus they questioned and scrutinized everything i said or posted, looking for flaws so they could put me down and tell me how "unsafe" i was. I see it here from time to time too.

It's hard to fend off people who are trying to help by way of telling you that you're wrong. I try and remain respectful and thank them for their input even if they are flamming -- it's the only way i see it to not set off the "Jerk NOOB Alarm".

Thing is, i'm not a noob there either, I joined that message board in 2008, but everybody who was there then has either moved on, or forgotten me. I've just been lurking for a few years now when i needed some info on a new topic -- so i asked a question. Then they started to question EVERYTHING i was doing as though i was a total ass muncher who had no regard for safety and probably eats children.

I wish there was a way you could take your credibility from site to site... somebody should get on a plugin for ezBoard plugin for it.

ANYHOW!

I'm glad that many, many, years ago I got all that out of the way here.

That is all.

The most important thing I've ever learned is how to learn something. I think I really put it together when learning how to play instruments. You definitely suck at first, but every little bit of progress helps and before you know it, you're playing. Then, if you keep at it, you go through steady years of progress where you might feel good about where you're at … And then look back a couple years later and you can't believe how much better you are. The important thing is to have faith in your progress.

It's amazing how the process of learning to blow glass and learning programming skills is similar to playing an instrument. It has always bugged me when people rag on 'noobs'... The beginner of today is tomorrow's awesome glassblower. Beginners need your help and positivity… Don't discourage people. They'll thank you for it later, and you might even end up proud.

totally agree, it's sometimes hard to stay motivated to get past the sucky stage to the somewhat acceptable stage. I personally need to be more OK with just throwing the janky shit away (or at least into a dark drawer) so it doesn't depress me about trying again.

^Ok that's better this thread just didn't seem right without you. :)

So is it safe to post freely on this forum? ...even in the glass discussion room? ...or that married with children thread?...

Fear the mods... trust me! :)

For sure, getting on the wrong side of the admins can really screw things up for you!

A musician friend once told me " I've never met anyone who practiced something consistently and got worse" I've always kept that in the back of my head when learning new things

It's funny, I totally got the same treatment when I first joined this forum. I started a thread sharing the way I blow glass ( I use a footpump hooked to a swivel), and was attacked on all fronts from a few members. Even after explaining that I learned to blow glass in '99, I was still called a "noob" and was told that my footpump just wouldn't work well for glass - even though I had worked full time with it for over two years at that point.

Luckily, I too like giving people shit, so I didn't take it personally enough to make me lash out or not come back here. But, it did leave a sour taste in my mouth as I was profiled as being something opposite of what I was, before anybody tried to get to know my background. I watched it continue, before Misha said something about being nicer to the new members. Before that, it seemed like new members either survived the gauntlet that was thrown at them when they first joined, or they disappeared in anger.

I think the internet has the tendency to bring about bad social patterns in some people/groups. It takes away a lot of the accountability that the real world gives you, which kinda gives some people the substitute teacher syndrome and they start kicking the kid's chair in front of them.

I try to remember the chaos theory when I interact with other people. I want the ripples I create to be positive and to create more positve ones, not the other way around.

I really have come to the conclusion .. that lame ass people .. who know a lot about stuff .. but arn't real good at doing it .. sit around on the internet forums .. and face book.. and wait .. for the chance to boost their own egos by belittling others work... My newest tech for dealing with them ... Is to spend days .. arguing .. totally stupid points.. and taking them on a troll ride of a life time .. Untill they realize .. they are just Hating for the sake of Hating .. Then I make out with them..
