The marble looks sweet! Well, what I can see of it. You have some really nasty reflections that make it really hard to see what is going on in that orb.

You took all the time to make the piece, you should spend a little more getting some better shots. I think it will help it sell quicker and for more.

All that being said, I understand how hard glass is to photograph, and I am no Ansel Adams to be sure. I just ordered a bunch of lighting equipment to see if it will up my game, but my guess is I will just be a noob with lighting equipment.

if you are taking your photos with a standard camera (non cellphone) buy a polarizing filter. it will cut all glare and reflection. beautiful work by the way

thanks for the suggestion in regards to the filter....i know absolutely squat about photography.
that being said (and in reply to area541) i took about 30 different shots of that marble.....i could not for the life of me capture the depth in the fuming....these were the best out of almost 3 dozen pics :(

I feel your pain. Sometimes I wish I wasn't such a DIYer and control freak, then I could just delegate things like photography to people that are actually professionals.

i've got a guy who bought a few pipes off of me who is a photog and has offered to help me out with some tips/tricks. but i'm afraid it's going to come down to having to buy a camera. i just use whatever phone i have at the time....got a motorola motoX now..camera on this SUCKS. i had an HTC evo previous...the camera on that was way better (well maybe not better per sey....but i could get better pics with it for whatever reason).

if you are using a cell phone you can use a polarizing filter in front of the lens as well. I have used polarized sunglasses in a pinch, just put them in from the of the lens and rotate until the reflections are minimal. It doesn't always work well and the sun should be 90 degrees to your subject either left or right side. Using a simple light setup and a polarizing filter indoors you can get some great results with all the control you need. Good luck and that marble looks dope :)

thank you, and thank you!!

i think i'm going to get a crash course/quick lesson on how to build a quick/simple light box. as it is, i have to rely on proper sunlight to get a decent pic. i usually don't have much issue, unless the marble in question has a lot of depth and/or is backed in a darker color (i used ns dk cobalt for the back of this one....should have used cobalt 1 or GA brilliant blue instead).

i can say this though...whomever this mib ends up with, is going to be pretty damn happy when they get it (i hope) as it's 100% nicer in hand then in the pic.

You need a photo box. It should be big enough to hold anything you're wanting to photograph, all sides should be white, and all the lighting must be diffuse. Try a lightbulb behind white cloth. Then your object (marble, pendant, pipe, whatever) is lit relatively evenly, but you don't get reflections distorting the internal details. You can buy a kit, or DIY one yourself with some wooden dowels, a white sheet, and some flashlights.

Here is a great link for learning glass photography tips. From Corning Museum of Glass. The video work is bad, but it is worth enduring.
