Thanks for sharing that. I'm truly blown away.
Amazing work. Please don't forget where his roots came from. He started in a school that wouldn't be if not for chihuly and studied under chihuly's minions.

Ah, I guess I am used to seeing Chihly's more abstract floral designs. Also, I mistakenly thought the "minions", stayed minions. For instance, students that just took a semester's apprenticeship, never to return to glass. You share and you learn :)

I agree that this work is way more impressive than anything with Chihuly's name on it that I have ever seen. I am in love.

Chihuly is not really known for being a great glassblower. He is known for his ideas about art and helping to transform glass into an art form in the studio movement. But he does not even blow glass himself anymore.
The Venetians I know hated him. They would make fun of his sea forms in classes that I took. It is not an intentional way of forming your glass. So every wonky thing they made they would call a Chihuly.
I do agree that this installation and still life is way more advanced then the Chihuly team makes. I have worked with a few of his glassblowers and I was not that impressed.

I don't really get the Chihuly negativity I've heard from other glass people. Is it because he doesn't actually work the glass himself? Is the art somehow deficient in a way not apparent to the average Jane (that's me) or what? He makes cool glass stuff, people love it and he has promoted glass art.

You have to be kidding me!
More advanced then the likes of Pino,Lino Billy Morris etc... the list is so long I could fill pages. Chihuly hands down has more skilled gaffers then anywhere in the world.
And seriously Nomad who gaffs for chihuly that you have worked with? That statement is freaken huge. What was your part in the works. I definitely need to hear more.
All that said:
That kid is only 26 and producing incredible work. It certainly moves me and breaks new ground. If he can acquire half the skills of (insert any of the greats such as) Billy Morris he will be one of the greats. Still his work is no where near as complex or refined as some of the shadows that he stands in. IMO

I agree with somewhere on this one. When I seen Nomads comments it really makes him look like he has no idea what he is talking about. Jim Mongrain is the man.

I have just worked with his assistants. That was who I was speaking about.

I have Dale's book right here. It is a matter of opinion who is best. I am not a big fan of Dale Chihuly or the hot shop really.

I do know that when Dale Chihuly dies the price of his work will skyrocket. A chandelier that is now $250,000.00 will cost a million dollars each probably.

I do find it odd that you wouldn't be a fan of everything glass has to offer. I understand not being a fan of Chihuly but what about Pino Signoretto or Lino Tagliapietra I guessI'm just a whore because I love glass even if it's a broken shard or just some random chuck of cullet. I have spent so many years learning about it and still have so much more to learn. I just can't imagine not being in love with this mysterious material. I can't discriminate by the way the glass is worked.
I'm so curious I have to ask.
Did you blow glass at the boathouse? Where did you blow glass with Chihuly's assistants and who was it? Please tell more.

Nope I did not blow glass out at the boathouse. There has been a few of his assistants that have made it out here and worked in New York for a wile. But it has been years since I have worked in the hotshop. So I do not remember that many details. One lady was hired to be my assistant making paper weights and the other used to rent time at my friends studio and gallery in Beacon NY. But like I said I focused most of my time on torchworking and I have not gone to the hotshop in years.

Maybe you should amend that to Chihuly HIRES more skilled gaffers than anyone Sky, rather than "has" them. It's not like Lino, Pino, etc. needed Chihuly to develop their skills. He paid them to make stuff that he put his name on because of the skills they already had. Nothing really wrong with that, I guess.
I've seen some nice stuff come out of his studio now and then, but Chihuly's true talent is in the marketing of the work and on pushing its scale. In that respect he is a genius. And love him or hate him, his marketing brilliance has definitely been an overall plus for the rest of the "art glass" world by helping to put glass in front of the public.
But as glass artists go, I'd take the personal work of any of the other guys mentioned long before something with Dale's name on it. (Not that I can afford the work of any of them. And not that Chihuly would - or should - give a rat's ass what I think.)
