Years back, I think there was a Flow or Glassline article about making parts for either bicycles or motorcycles. You might be able to track that down too for some ideas.

I don't keep up with harleys but it says forty eight on the tank... looks like a sportster.

Been into bikes my whole life and I dream of the day my skills are good enough to start throwing cool accents / mibs on cars and bikes.
The "fourty-eight" is an edition, not a year. They are currently producing it

The hard thing about Bikes is that almost everything on them is a structural part. They also vibrate like hell so whatever you put on needs to be fastened damn well. Bolt heads would be cool, but how could you get them to stay on, while being able to easily take them off to service the bolt.

The things I always thought of when it came to a bike would be
-Bar end caps
-Valve Stem caps on the tires
-Bolt head covers (if possible?)
-if you knew a leather worker you could do custom stud(s) on the seat or saddle bags
-pendant on a fender
-On the other side of the bike there should be 2 plaques that could be redone. The '5' and the '1800' (if his bike has it)

The oil tank idea would be out of this fucking world, but that is a functioning part. It would have to be made very very well and it's risky.

.... And a really really cool idea would be a 'Gremlin Bell' (or gremlin pendant) which is a huge part of street motorcycle history/culture.
http://www.gremlinbells.com <-- best fast description I could find, but many many companies make these. You usually hang them at the front bottom of the frame, or in the gap between the front wheel and the lower triple tree.

Thanks for your ideas guys, also for things I didn't even think about particularly the vibration aspect.

Me too, my first thought was a nice big accent in the centre of the petrol cap but Jim says he has a locking one so it would cover the keyhole.

Second thought was the big eff-off bolt that goes through the top of the front forks, maybe something secured on the top of that...

Thanks again, much appreciated.
