View Full Version : Which glass to use?

2cool2hear

My kit from MountainGlass came in and now I need to buy some glass to play with. Someday I want to be able to blow and sell chilliums, spoons, condensers, and some interesting stuff, starting with the small stuff.

I'm thinking a few variety of 12mm-25mm rods and solid rods? Experiences/suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks

What torch did you get?

I just got my first real order of glass from mountain glass arts. Im a noob too. I have a GTT Bobcat

I spent 104 bucks with them and got some nice glass.shipping my glass 2,400 miles did cost me $38 but they did me right. 18 pounds

I got 4mm rod , 8mm, 16mm import rod.

tubing 12mm 26mm, 32mm all in heavy wall or extra heavy wall import. 12MM 2mm wall makes a good stout blow pipe.

Colors "The Alchemist's Guide To Boromax Chemistry" A nice pack of color samples and some frit. Decent samples for $20 cant beat it.

Would love to see some of that 26 and 32 import I've been thinking to get some but have been hesitant bout getting the import for quality reasons. Stones and or scratches which cause bubbles which looks nasty :\

Good to in the Alchemists Guide. GA Sample pack was in one my original Mountain Glass order and it has great Information!

12 mm heavy wall for chillums, 25.4 mm heavy wall for spoons, 7 mm rod for handles, 4mm rod to rake color with, I use 9.5 mm heavy wall tubing for blow tubes but it is better to pull points. That should work for a noob.

For starters, when y'all say import do you mean chinese? Pretty much all clear is imported. That being said, I would never suggest wasting time or money on Chinese clear. The quality is terrible and the integrity is low…very low. I wouldn't trust it to hold up over time.

That being said, I would buy the following:

Rod- 4mm, 6mm, 10mm and 16mm
Tube- 9.5mm, 12mm, 16mm, 26mm and 32mm, all heavy wall.

That will give you a variety of stuff that will accommodate trying out just about anything.

Asian glass is crappy but it is also really cheap. I would use it. Actually I still do use it sometimes.
ABR is having a 40% off sale on Asian glass right now. I would get it wile it was on sale too.

My most used are 4mm rod for small punties and bridging, 7mm rod for larger punties and striping clear. 12-16mm rod for horns/sculpture work. 12mm heavy/extra heavy wall for blow tubes. 25mm for spoons and the like. 38mm for hollow sculpture work.

Do you think this is fair price or would you rather order them individually? I'm thinking about placing the order tomorrow morning the first thing.
I'm not sure about the brand either, I hope they're not junk.

MountainGlass $100 Clear Boro Package (http://www.mountainglass.com/200-Clear-Boro-Package_2.html?sc=2&category=9169#.VEM4tUt1RnE)
Includes rods in the following sizes:
(4) 3mm
(4) 5mm
(3) 7mm
(1) 10mm
(1) 15mm

It also includes tubing in the following sizes:
(1) 9.5mm x 2.0mm
(2) 12mm x 2.2mm
(1) 16mm x 2.5mm
(1) 19mm x 3.2mm
(1) 22mm x 3.0mm
(2) 25.4mm x 4.0mm
(1) 31.7mm x 4.0mm

The Alchemist's Guide To Boromax Chemistry kit looks useful, I'm getting it too.

If its from mountain glass it will be good glass and thats a fair price for that amount of glass but ul want more of the 12mm that u should buy seperate

Its true that u could buy all this for less in some places but theres no garuntee of the quality like mountinglass has

I use 9.5 mm heavy wall for downstems on my bubblers. I make a lot of them also. With 3 or 4 mm holes. If the holes are too small they get clogged and if there too big they don't work right.

Well someone was messing with you. Unless you are making some sort of crazy mini that won't ever actually be used, you should never use anything smaller than 9.5.

I dont even have 4m tubing in my shop. In the decade I've blown glass, I've never used 4m tubing. On anything.

I have never even seen it. I think even my uranium capillary tubing was at least 5mm. When I saw the initial 4mm suggestion, I giggled and thought he was just being a dick. If he is serious, and someone else was the dick, I am sorry everyone missed it or let it happen.

But props for pulling off a bubbler with 4mm tubing. Did it actually function?

Somebody donate that kid a torch already, please... Occupy his time better.
A 7 stud, quadruple mix, nitrogen injected, HOTHEAD, with 1 13/28" hose, thats what I learned on and was suggested by my mentor.

I am not doubting that it exists. That's just a really small down stem. I am very familiar with exactly what 4mm is. 4mm rod is a staple. That's small and thin enough that it will clog and be hard to poke through without breaking.

I am giving a lot of credit. I don't know that I could pull off a bub with a 4mm down stem.

However, shops will not buy a bub with that size down stem unless it'a a micro…so don't buy it for that purpose. Go with the 9.5…or even 12mm…but I am a fan of big holes and airways. As a hobbyist or not-for-profit artist, go for it…but if you want to sell your stuff to shops or the general public, do not use the 4mm. I actually super curious about who suggested it.

Btw, the torch mentioned above, I got it with the hoses cut, I got a feeling it was stolen..

My apologies to 2cool2hear, I saved up money and cruzed over to glasscraft and purchased tons of diffrent glass sizes. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 16, 20 mm rods. 9, 12, 19, 22, 25, 32 mm tube each one in medium, heavy and extra heavy if avaiable. Most of my thin wall is still collecting dust. From my personal experience I would suggest...
6mm.
12mm
16mm rod

12-12.7mm
25-26mm
32mm all heavy wall tubing.
That's what I usually need and use.. Just my 2cents.
Sorry for all the unnecessary posts..

hmm have i been doing something wrong?

when i bought my torch this was included.
6700867009

its about 5mm od. 3mm id. same id as your average bowl hole. i use it to for hammer bubbler downies.

i havent had one clog on me mid hit. but i dont partake it flowers too much these days. ivee been trying to get in tune with mind and body... ive been doing yoga, eating greens and getting colonics.

ive given alot to friends too and havnt had any complaints. but i guess when you get a free pipe your not gonna bitch too much.

anyways there is ample room in the downstem for a paper clip to free any clog that may happen.
67010

plus it fits on my pokie bowl push really well and makes for a very easy to achieve straight downster

not trying to be a jerk but metric abbreviations are so short theres really no excuse for not using the correct one. "m" is meter "mm" is millimeter "ml" is milliliter which is volume. i know everyone knows this, and i know nobody is using 4 meter tubing for a bubbler, but its just one more "m." your finger is already right there. haha no sweat tho just sayin.

And then my head just exploded…and the shit that stuck to the walls looked like radishes. Funny, because i smelled art related radishes the other day, but forgot to mention it. I know my fear of radishes might be getting a bout pervasive, but that doesn't mean it's not real. It's like a radish fungus really. I can only imagine the time it take to maintain a fungal radish garden. Apparently, it's manageable for radishes.

I would guess the ID on the 1.mm stuff is maybe 0.5-0.4mm and the 0.8mm stuff much less.
