have you tried tapatalk? it's a free app and uploads pics smoothly. pretty sure it works on any device :)

i dont like tapatalk. i use the mobile interface (which doesn't even let you put in pictures). we go round and round about this everytime. theres no reason the site shouldnt be able to resize or whatever the issue is. this is literally the only forum i have been on in 15 years that can't handle posting images.

Ahhh yeah... Like I said I don't like it. Nor should I have to use a third party app (and give them all my info and look at their ads) just to post a picture.

So you think the site owners here should dip into their own pockets and pay for larger file storage capabilities so that you can post pictures easier? Your coming here for free advise on how to work yout glsss, and the site still is not good enough for you?
your gonna have to do a little work.

I'd actually be glad to solve it for you if we could figure out the real problem. I don't have any problems uploading pics from any format you can access the site through. I don't use tapatalk myself except to test it for others. But like you said, we've gone round and round about this and I'm not sure what else I can do.
Maybe when we upgrade to the next version of vb here soon it will solve it for you. I'll cross my fingers.

You're missing half of the equation. For the most part, the community here produces the content that people are learning from, and the site owners provide a place to do it. He's not asking for consumption to be easier, but production, and he's not getting paid for that production. The site owners should be grateful for people producing and sharing content on their site (not to say that they aren't). We're not a bunch of leeches - we're the blood that keeps this site alive.

you're not contributing anything other than internet arguing.
1. the site doesn't need to pay for more storage, the images can/should be resized on the backend to whatever size the site would like. while this forum is not tiny, its far from a large forum so the amount of processing power it takes should be negligible.
2. storage is dirt cheap these days if storage was the issue. it appears to be hosted with modwest which means it either has "unlimited" or at the very least 10GB of storage. 10GB is a lot for images that get resized.
3. it's a forum based around art, picture posting should be one of the easiest things to do.
no one is telling you that you should batch mix your colors from scratch. things like vbulletin are made to do these sorts of things.
Misha, i'm going to try to pictures from my computer and see if that works.

There is a 16mb per image limit. This should be sufficient for any mobile device's camera.

my comment is based on the presumption that he was talking about the 2mb (picture) file size limit that i have run into on occasion. when using most modern cell phones your images are going to come out around this size do to the higher image resolution that is a result from the exponential growth of technology. i think if you really look logistically at what it takes to run a website, the average 300 visits this site gets per day, will not allow for any surplus income... or income at all for that matter. so the only way the owner of this site can bump up the file size allowance is if they get an influx of visitors per day. unfortunatley glass blowing is a very small niche, so we as a community will have to WORK to develope any kind of a proper database on the subject. so as anyone who took intro to economics will explain to you, in order for ease of consumption to expand, the demand for said consumption must also expand. this will give the providers of a given service a profit incentive to provide said service (or in this case not loose money). but as stated before this niche market will never provide any website with enough daily traffic to allow the host to sell advertising that will generate enough profit to provide facebook style hosting/interface.
so for now we as the blood that keep this baby alive need to put in our fair share. sorry if for some reason this wasnt understood the first time around

its when i post any picture in the forum or in response to a thread. im using my laptop when it happens and running either google chrome or ie. so im not running the site in a 3rd party app. ive just always resized the pictures via paint. not that big of a deal...

your using vault network as your host/server right? this is pretty common practice for small websites. the host only allows images of a certain size which will help keep file size down. as catchy as the cloud sounds, those are still servers somewhere, and servers have hard drives that cost money and require maintenance. did they not inform you of the limitations that would be passed onto your users?

sorry but you're totally wrong. while i'm sure misha isn't going to be retiring from the income from the site, i really doubt she loses money. There are donations as well as some advertising. The cost to run a moderately small website isn't that high. I doubt there is much overhead more than the hosting fee ($7 or perhaps $30 a month for a shared server - i could be wrong and it could be $100 a month for a dedicated server) and the domain registration ($15 or less yearly). In any case, thats not even the point. the point is that whatever she is already paying should be able to resize pictures. its not additional cost.
to some extent the users of a forum have a right to have expectations for basic functionality... for without users using the site it would be an echo chamber here and there would be no donations, no content, no advertising and no information.
misha, i'm not directing this at you. i love this site and have gained unmeasurable amounts of information from here. the image posting is frustrating but far from a deal killer for me.

It would make sense that it was a server side issue if I was running into size limits, but I am not. It's a vb setting somewhere. At times they like to fight with each other and I have to find which setting is creating the conflict. For this particular issue, I haven't been able to figure it out for ahreno.
You are right in that it should work and be easy. VB has come out with a new version since I last upgraded and I am in the process now of heading us in that direction. Hopefully some of the weird issues we have will be fixed, but it is out of the box software so there will always be some issues. VB has done well for us for almost 10 years now so personally I am a fan of them even if they aren't perfect.
I'm sorry this is frustrating. I've installed apps like tapatalk to help balance out the problems VB still has. There's also forurunner, which has no ads and is part of VB. You could try that? I wish I had a better answer.

eveyones entitled to an oppinion but you dont have to search very far to find out how much this site makes per day. and i can gauruntee you its not enough to have somebody come out and reprogram the interface everytime someone runs into a small hickup. donations aside ill bet you this website hasnt made enough in its lifespan from advertising to hire an i.t. professional.

i tried a 6.0MP (3264x1836 & 1.9MB) image from my phone and it worked.
i tried a 8.0MP (3264x2448 & 2.3MB) image from my phone and it errored (no error given)
so if i had to guess there's either a 2MB cap or perhaps a max dimension cap set somewhere.

you're not helping anything. just stop. theres no need for reprograming or hiring an IT professional. It's a setting somewhere or a plugin thats needed / set wrong / malfunctioning.
and yeah, vbulletin is awesome. it powers a ton of forums out there. thats the frustrating part... knowing that it IS capable of this simple task but is failing. it's not an attack on misha by any means, its a frustration directed at the software issue. upgrading will probably fix it but upgrading forums is always scary. make sure to have backups of backups of the database and have one stored offline on a harddrive or at least on a different server. it would be devastating to lose all the info buried in this site... which if i remember reading correctly may have happened once already.

misha, hovering over that image says its 1.87mb and i was only doing 1 at a time.
PyroChixRock

It IS 1.87 mb now, because the internal image resizer that is built into VB resized it. It started out at 2.15mb. I chose that one because it is over the 2mb size we seem to be having an issue with.

i only put the one picture when i tried and it didnt resize automatically. strange. i pulled the pic you posted and the file size was bumped down to 1.87mb. maybe the server hates me? its never really been a concern tho. its a pretty quick fix to resize manually

this was from a support thread:
You should go into your Admin CP -> Attachments -> Attachment Manager and edit each file type to increase the maximum file size allowed for each.
You'll possibly also need to increase the PHP settings upload_max_filesize and post_max_size to accommodate larger uploads (here's a link explaining it, for Drupal but it applies to all PHP programs).

tapatalk works because it resizes the images itself.
it goes gray because its trying to display the full site (as opposed to a scaled down mobile version) on a tiny screen. thats why there's a separate css for mobile devices. unfortunately the skin for mobile has no way of inserting an image in a reply.

No, it's a global setting. They worked for me on the mobile apps cause they have built in resizers. Which vb itself also has but seems to be glitchy.
So what about forumrunner, Ahreno? It's the VB mobile app, it doesn't have ads, it's free, it's not 3rd party, it resized your pics. Could you maybe check that one out?
