But will rain mess up my propane regulator? Not a constant exposure, but like if it was out in the rain for a few hours while in use.

Condensation tends to form on regulators under heavy use, so they are made to be in contact with moisture.
However, I would avoid moisture on your tank if you can. Propane tanks tend to rust and I presume this weakens the tank.

just throw a tarp over the tank or maybe a baggie over the regulator if you dont care about the tank...

they make tanks that are made to be outside. they are used for heating fuel out here in the country. or just put some kinda tarp or box over it, would be insanly easy.

All pro. tanks are made to be outside!!! Look at local laws, most places it is illeagel to have a can inside at all.
You can build a 'dog house' for yer pro. can,

How about a plastic bucket upside down over tank/regulator...

Well, no, I haven't noticed that.
What kind of torch are you using? Are you sure it's not funky propane?

Simple questions get simple answers:
No, your reg will be fine. I've run mine covered in snow, and it's a cheap one.

This may be one of those "is it plugged in?" kind of statements, but are you sure you're not running any damaging flames (e.g. melting the face)? Cause "liitle pieces of metal" doesn't sound too good--neither does carbon.

Is there anything else going on in your shop? Is there any extra dust or dirt being moved around? The other day, I was working at my torch while Willy was across the room running a grinder. No kidding, metal dust from the grinder came across the room and was pulled right into the flame and onto my glass. My ventilation pulled it over and the thrust from the flame pulled it on in.
If you are running your flame right, you should not get any carboning like that from a triple mix. What do your candles look like? What pressures are you running?
