Hey all,

Just got my ventilation finished yesterday, so I got to melt for the first time ever today! It's been a long time of piecing together a studio bit by bit, but I'm finally there. So it took me a few tries to pull some decent usable points (i don't have any 12mm for blowtubes), but I eventually got one, and this was the result. I feel like the shaping looks pretty good, but damn blowing holes and pushing the bowl is touchy. The hole kept wanting to open up while I was heating it up for the push, and the walls of the bubble kept wanting to collapse. I'm gonna watch a few more videos and try to figure out some of the nuances of good control.http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/16/e6b77ebd11aad8db97a0a5d66a2dfb06.jpg

Progress! This was the best one of the night. The carb and bowl came out pretty good, but the shaping is wonky. Oh well. Still, I don't think I'm doing too bad for less than 4 hours on the torch!http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/19/d6bbbd923b65cab48e1ca115c898c723.jpg

Great job, that's really good for 4 hours on the torch. Addictive, isn't it?

Some more pics! I've been playing with fuming a little, and practicing condensing the tubing some to thicken up the walls. I've tried a few inside out fumes but I haven't gotten flaring out down yet, I end up smashing it in and end up with a thick ugly glob instead of nice flared tubing. It might help if I had jacks, maybe that will have to be my next purchase, along with a kiln.http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/20/623c8998ffe059f11e46984887b93ca0.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/09/20/5822f8d1a6a2bddcd752a39d909b1339.jpg

Lookin' good yo!

Sounds like you might have been a lil' thin on that first but the others look nice. To keep your bowl hole from opening instead of condensing properly, start polishing from the top down to the hole, poke it good with your reamer, and reshape with your push again if needed.

Thanks guys. Do you mean after the bowl is already pushed, when you go in to clean out tooling marks and finalize the bowl shape?

You don't need jacks to flare a tube and you don't need to flare it much to fume inside…you just need a little flared lip to help catch the flame and fume. Heat the open end of your tube, just on the very edge. When it starts glowing, place your reamer gently against the inside of the top (handle up and tip pointed towards the inside of the tube) and let the tube rest on the reamer as you spin it around.

Do I do that in the flame or out of it? Thanks I'll give that a shot tonight!

if you can do stuff out of the flame it's better on your tools, and you can in this case.

make sure you're not overheating the glass too. if it's gathering on the end it's too hot, and that might be why you're getting globby results. it's just got to be barely plastic to move it. it'll still look pretty solid while you're spinning it at the point when it's fairly easy to move.

oh, and heat more than you intend to flare, hottest on the end, continuing in a gradient past the base of your flare. if you're just heating the lips of your hole things will end badly.

I was heating about an inch and a half. That totally makes sense though about overheating it and getting globby, I bet that's what was happening. Thanks for the advice guys, I'll post pics of how it turns out!

I would only hear a half inch max for just fuming. You only need a big flare if you are drawing lines inside.

Here is my second attempt at a pendant, and my first marble. The marble could have definitely come out better, but I'm pretty happy with the pendant. I feel like the bale came out great- probably got lucky on that one.
