View Full Version : What did you do with all the wonky looking stuff you made when learning the basics?

So, I've been playing around with scraps long enough to get a feel for for the torch and glass and I want to start doing some proper practice.

I've seen a lot of people suggest making a bunch of a form like a spoon or a sphere until to get a feel for getting the glass to do what I want on a repeatable basis, and I can see how that would be a good next step.

Thing is, I live in the middle of the desert, and describing myself as an antisocial hermit is not enough of an exaggeration to make much of a difference here.

What can I do with the pile of goofy looking crap I'm sure to churn out as I'm getting a better feel for this? Before now, I've had few enough things survive and luck enough in to looking decent that I've held on to things, but if I'm shooting for practice on shaping consistency, I've got no clue what to do what a pile of gradually less crooked looking spoons or what have you.

I tend to practice melting down to a gather, pulling out to a rod and then coil potting the rod. Rince and repeat.

Shit gets tempramental after a re melt or two but it's all still a learning experience for me.

Give it away or pitch it in a lake. Keep one or two of the gnarliest and put them in a box. It will get better sooner than later.

Hey Joe not to make lite of your question, the truth is by the way we all have wonky stuff lying around and wonder what to do with it. I am glad I kept some of this work from my earlier days. Not only helps me see how far I have come, but keeps me a humble as I thought I was good back then. So now when I get a fat head I just remember that there are so many great glass people that I am glad to just be a part of this incredible group of talented artists. Keep working at it all the best.

If you toke, save all your usuable pieces... use 'em for a week then toss 'em. Never clean a piece again. Live the good life.

Theres about 30 various oil rigs/pipes sitting in a cabinet in my kitchen. Not sure what im gonna do with them when i move. Feels like a waste to throw them away but if I give them to friends my friends wont pay me for my nice ones.
