How to properly destroy a piece.

I did the classic "forgot to turn the kiln on" the other day :bangHead: , which i realized after i spent 45 minutes on something. But, my question is, how do you guys like to destroy your pieces. You can never go wrong with the water bucket, but does anyone have any other good ideas, or are those trade secrets :crazy:

I wish i had a field and a baseball bat sometimes......

my classic peice destroyer is the baseball style pitch to the wall, or the basketball style bounce on the floor. the bounce normally doesnt happen though. and ive been known to throw a peice or two through the fan while its running. thats always a good one.

One of my shops was in a barn with cement floors and a maximum ceiling height of an easy 25 feet, maybe 30. So I would throw the pieces up and see what kind of height records I could set without breaking the defected piece. A lot of them would bounce, which was always fun. Many would simply refuse to break, so I would the cover them with a towel/rag/whatever and smash with a hammer. The hammer thing was very satisfying.

Sad to admit, but I've also been known to break all kinds of shit slamming pieces down when things go wrong as I'm making them.

Finally, if it functions and you don't mind your friend having it, doesn't everybody have that one friend who will guaranteed break any piece he has within a couple weeks?

If I was you, I would not have broken your piece on behalf of your kiln not being on. But as long as your asking..........Bucket slam, then thru the fan. The worst is when you do the slam and it doesn't break. :bangHead:

It was an IO piece with a sparkle color, i watched it for like a minute or two and it was like a global warming on the ice caps, then i popped it back in the flame for the hell of it, and that pretty much finished it off. I thought about saving it(patchwork quilt style) but i thought i had to punish myself.

hey slinger.....come down here on your way to vegas and ill make one just for you and your documetary. then throw it though the fan. its fun. but you better be wearing your shades and have a fire extinguisher handy just incase. hhaa. the only satisfaction in working on something for hours and having it break while your working on it. is to toss it. atleast for me anyways.

in stead of breaking it. next time just turn the kiln to on and stick the pcs in the kiln. why break it if nothing is wrong with it?

For me, it would have taken longer to put it back together rather than to just start over, significantly longer. Plus, i really wanted to destroy something to take out the anger. It was just a little tester prodo IO spoon. Not too much glass wasted.

Oh, new twist on the baseball pitching thingy, set up the lawn mower so the blades are showing and spinning, THEN huck the piece at it. I'm guessing there would be similair results with the fan, but there's no way my fan could handle anything more than a bead.

So slinger really would be slinging that piece...ha ha :D (wait, sorry, that joke was pretty bad even for me)

Oh, ok I din't know It DID CRACK on you at the time.
If it had't broke when you turned the kiln on I would of flame anneld it best I could while waiting for the kiln to warm up some then stuck it in and would of crossed my fingers.

i personally prefer to yell at it before i break it. then i throw it at the back wall of the bench. if it doesnt break i yell at it some more, maybe call it names, and then throw it in the water bucket. thats what you get for not listening to me, glass!
