id like to know a good starting point for center hole size and sand grain size and basic volumes to start from for corresponding times.

Well you need to decide on a grain size then make sure it's 100% dry. Once you have that you will have to experiment. The hole size won't matter as much as volume passing through it. I just left one end open dump in sand start a timer once the timer goes off quickly dump out excess. Back in the oven one more time at low temp to make sure no moisture is present and seal with epoxy.

I don't really think there is a right way to go about it just as long as it's dry and times out the way you want.

Some outfit out of Nebraska is wanting me to make hour glasses. I'm not into it but I told them I would. I'm guessing I'll be lucky to clear 10$ on each one.
