Me and the boy were talking. It seems like people are fuming with shitty ventilation now more than ever, possibly harming themselves. This is just a PSA that fumes are toxic and can kill you.

Since you bring up the topic of silver fuming, I'll ask this here:

If I get headaches after fuming at the current studio I'm at, it's pretty safe to say that it doesn't have proper ventilation, right?

I am working on finding a new place to work, I'm not going to go to that place anymore.

Also, one of the other glassblowers at this studio vapes e-cig. He likes to take really big hits off the e-cig, and he exhales these huge, super thick clouds of smoke/vapor or whatever. I have seen him exhale that thick cloud right under the hood, and the smoke seriously wasn't moving at all hardly, only at the very top of the cloud where it was basically touching the hood. Again, probably not proper ventilation, right?

I know you guys may think that the answer is obvious here, but I feel like I have to ask because none of the other glassblowers at this studio seem at all concerned about the ventilation, they all think it's fine which is what's confusing me. I guess they don't get headaches so they think it's cool.

the headaches are probably from nitrogen dioxide, which is not good
get outta there

ventilation is expensive, and because you don't immediately see the affects of having poor ventilation, people tend to kick the can down the road, waiting for a thyme when they're balling extra hard and shit, before they plan on spending that much money to properly ventilate their studio.

Headaches could be from eyesight strain or any other reason. Vapor clouds are heavier and may not be a good test. check with smoke if possible. Breathing in metal vapors is bad. If you question the effectiveness of your setup, talk to a pro.

Ya, no bowlpusher. Its been gone over pretty thoroughly on this forum before, that fuming with gold and silver produces far less toxic gases in the air than many chemicals that offgass out of colored glass. Colored glass fumes are much more toxic than silver and gold fumes.

Silver fume alone will not kill you. Just turn you blue.

I use not only silver but pure silver nitrate ,copper oxide and cobalt oxide to color my glasses.
I do that since some 35 years now.Off course I always have a good ventilation and avoid enhaling any dust of these.
Due to my health problems my body system gets checked regulary since many years and there was never something found related to poisoning with silver or any other of these chemicals.
When I work with silver nitrate what looks like salt grains I mix it with water so I can paint it onto the surface of my glass. If I get some of that on my fingers after a while the skin turns dark blue. You can not wash this off and it stays for about a week until its grown out.I just take a pumice to rub it off.
Years ago my brother who is a glass blower too once actually had a poisoning from using silver nitrate and it turned out that the matter just was lack of proper ventilation.
He had to take some pills, installed a good vent system and everything went all right.

So I think thats proof enough to say that working with silver will not kill you nor make you sick if working under correct circumstances.

so long,Glassmax
