Hey all, I'm new to the board here and glass in general. Great community resource you have here, my lurking ass has learned tons already! :) Anyways I am just in the midst of setting up and hooked up my new red max last night. i set it at around 5 propane and 15 oxygen. the top premix torch worked prefectly, but when i turned on the bottom surface mix it made this weird whistling sound. turning the oxygen up seemed to make it whistle even louder.

i'm not sure if this is dangerous or anything? the sound is almost like when you fill a balloon then squeeze the hole and let the air out slowly...or kinda like someone cutting one.
i talked to the guy at nortel and he said they will replace it, but that i can use it in the meantime and it should be safe..i dont know how comfortable i am with that. does anyone have a clue as to what the problem could be??

thanks,
beachglass

PS. how do i make my pipes double blown?

just kidding :D

Mine used to whistle, but I fed it seven Saltine crackers in less than a minute. There was no way it could continue to whistle.

Jut my luck though, it started humming instead.

i wouldnt think anything could blow up on it... nortel would tell you if there was a safty problem...

if it was a national or something like that i would worry....

it's probably resonance in the micro-tubes they use for the surface mix. If one of those has the slightest bend in the wrong place it will whistle. Should be safe, but I'm sure it's annoying. You might try a little higher oxy pressure, that would change the tone and might cancle the resonance... *shrug* I'd just get it replaced if they're willing to hook it up.

My redmax premix whistles too, but i've had no problems with it so far. I just turn up the music :)

hey guys, it turned out it was my regulator. im not sure if it was letting too much or too little o2 through, but it was a strange sound for sure...thanks for all the help, i will no longer fear the whistle
