View Full Version : Oxygen tank size
Hello. New to the forum. I am just wondering if an 80cu/ft tank is adequate for working with glass. When doing a quick search, it appears that most people use larger tanks. Does anyone use an 80cu/ft or smaller?

I have an 80. A big torch will kill it quick, like under an hour. Just using a 7 port small torch you can get a few sessions out of it, but it will still be measured in hours, not days. I fill my own tanks so it's cool to have a portable tank but the oxygen cartels charge almost as much to fil an 80 as a 250. Where I live we can't own any tanks bigger than 80's, only lease, and 02 is pricey so most flameworkers use liquid oxy or oxygen machines.

I gave a guy on a minor a half-full 80 (11-1200psi ish) and he brought it back a couple days later and said he made 8 pendants out of it. By my guess that's like 3 or4 hours,5- 6 maybe? Tops. Double that for a full tank. Still only going to be a few shortish sessions per fill but maybe someone on a little torch has a knee high tank and they can chime in.

I own a 155 and 2 255's. I dont fill them anymore, it cost too much.
When starting out and running a smaller torch a oxygen concentrator is the way to go. You dont have to make many trips to buy oxygen bottles to pay for a concentrator.
Buying oxygen will be one of you biggest expenses but Oxygen concentrators are GOLD.

I have two 281s-- I run a Beth Champ and sometimes a Bravo. I get a 281 filled locally at a welding supply for 20 dollars. I go to the loading dock and exchange tanks into the bed of my Pickup. Just a couple miles away. If I am doing Two inch boros marble takes about 1/3 of a 281 with the Beth Champ--- Or if I use the Bravo for boro floral pendents I can make 15 or so of them on a tank. So that is dollar and a quarter of Oxygen to make a pendant. A person used to handling oxygen bottles can handle a 281 or 300 cu inch bottle using a pickup truck. A 125 or 150 is easier-- but only has half the O2 in it. With an 80 and a Bravo you could make three or four pendants--- but would run out before finishing a large marble.
