I've been tinkering around with making lathes and motorised punty rotators for a few years, I've only been partially successful with small single side ones (one based off big truck bearings and a $150 ebay 80mm ID 3jaw chucks worked, but I never finished the other tail stock)
This guy even made his own chucks!
With a couple safety changes (those chucks will eventually smack someone) it looks like a great design.
Appears to be welded up almost exclusively with 1" square stock.
I'm working on one now that doesn't use chucks at all, it uses 4, 38mm, 25mm or 13mm ID single groove bearings the tube slides directly into the bearings. I haven't figured out the motor part, but it works pretty well spinning by hand. (One side only, even the small amount of friction from the bearings starts twist).
