I've come into a few cases of really weird glass.

I did the "Coe pull test" , it's compatable with schott, simax, pyrex, kimble, etc, leaning toward's kimble (33.5?).

I think it's chinese, it works like the low density Chinese black, kinda gooey.

Really really soft, and not even. Kimble is a bit soft too, but it consistent. This stuff has to be heated to super floppy, basically you need to work it like it's offhand glass (ie. Hotter is better)

I found great uses for that gooey black, it works great over a thick substrate.

Anyone else find themselves with a bunch of hard to work glass?

I have what is a lot for me, about 5 cases, about 13 mm, 25mm,36,42, 50. Guessing sizes, haven't measured yet.

It comes without the ends melting clean (I think only corning still does that?, last Schott I got was saw cut).
Larger tunes are individually wrapped with brown paper. For some reason, one of the 50mm tubed had a stone, it was circled in silver Sharpie or something.

Is anyone using weird soft gooey glass, and how did you overcome it?

I have one tip.
Tip
Use 13mm cheap glass as handles.
1. Cut each tube 3x or 4x depending on what length you prefer.
2. Cut (snap) 6" lengths of quality tubing.
3. Seal the quality tubing shorts to the crap tubes.

I like to have a lot of handles prepped and ready, it's a good way to use up your handles that have gotten too short. I had a shop mate who used to trash his handles.

I found this stuff doesn't work well for tech that requires implosions, or anything where a graded heat is needed.

It works pretty good on a steel or quartz punty/tube handle

It seems to make good seals, it gets detrification if you don't work it perfect, or if it moves so you can see where the seal needs touch up.

I am concerned about how it will hold up to use and abuse, so I'm being really careful it doesn't get mixed into my materials. I think it will be OK if used by itself, I tried putting a worked section in (simax or kimble), way too floppy to take it.

Edit.

Anyone have tips on how to use this stuff?
