Is the whole shop like an old automotive trailer? Do you drive the whole shop to swap out your lox? This looks fantastic, I think I'm going to do something similar soon, it's interesting to see.

I’m warming up the studio now. The equipment does not work as well until it’s room temperature in here. I turn the exhaust fan off when the torch isn’t on. I have vents at the top of the shed. So when it’s this cold it works well.
A custom shed that I designed for my glass works so well it’s hard to replace with another space.
Next time I might get baseboard heat and air conditioning. But this uses a lot less energy.

Since I just completed setting my workspace up, I figured I'd put up a picture.

Funnily enough, I've only been at it for a few days, and I'm already losing the fight against entropy...

what the average size of your stations? looking at a tuff shed or something similar to set up in. 8' x 8' enough space?

Unfortunately I've moved my bench around a lot. Lived in the same house for about 5 years....

I started off in the garage, moved to barn, moved to basement, moved back to garage back to basement... Lol

Every time I made my bench about the same size.

4ft deep 6ft wide.

Thats how big my bigger bench was, this new one i built is more like 3x3 It works just fine.

My shop is 7 x 8, bench is 3 x 7 wide. I have 3 oxycons , kiln, compressor, 2 k tanks, seating for 2,glass rack ,a mirage and a phantom but no room for spectators other then the entry way.

Its tight, more room is very nice to have but you can get by. Building a bigger shed is not too hard. I made a 7 x 12 foot greenhouse a few years back and it was cheap and easy to do.

I need an upgrade so I am looking at a real garage now 16 x 24 so I can have a crucible kiln, a glass lathe to go with my other lathes and machine tools. I have a concrete pad in place already. Get a 200 amp power service to it all by itself on its own meter. I might want a bathroom and shower so I can live in it when the woman gets pissed. :)

Studio looks great Gypsea. Your exhaust system looks like a few professional studios I've been in. the only differences is that you have two fans and they only had one, and they had people
working on all sides of the table. With that hood and fans system I doubt flame plume is a problem.

Chad S. What is that white thing on your wall next to your intake air? An air conditioner or heater?

That looks like a gas radiant heater.

Chad S
04-16-2018, 03:52 PM
Yup its a gas radiant heater, it heats the objects in the room rather than heating the air, since i'm sucking out the air, it's way more efficient this way for me. It is a vent less heater, but I've still always wonder if the inline fan is drawing any unwanted fumes from it or not, please let me know what ya think.

Is propane? propane tends to give off moisture as it burns, if you have any windows I'm sure you noticed moisture on the window after heavy use.

I have used one like that and they are pretty safe and cheap way to get heat. Your bench looks great!

Natural gas gives off moisture, too. I don't think you should have any issues at all running the heater with your ventilation system going.

Chad S
04-16-2018, 05:50 PM
Well that's good to hear & know. It's hard lined in w/ natural gas btw.

dustyg
04-16-2018, 06:16 PM
One thing . . . if you notice your intake air blowing the pilot light around, you might swivel that intake pipe around a little bit. I'm not sure it could happen, but you don't want the pilot blowing out and flooding the studio with gas.

Chad S
04-16-2018, 07:19 PM
Right on I hear ya, that would be no bueno. It doesn't mess with the pilot light at all, it does look a lil deceiving in the pic but it points toward the ground, as I was having it mess with the torch flame slightly. I have it slightly angled towards the heater so the air passes in front of the heat zone. I also have a 4" insulated duct coming up from under the bench that pushes fresh air up between me & the torch while working. During the cold months, I cap off both fresh air intake ducts when not working to keep the cold air out. There is a back draft damper in the exhaust hood duct that opens up from the inline fan when turned on & closes when turned off.

Nomad

I wish I had a better heater like that. I presently use two space heaters and it gets cold sometimes. Takes an hour to heat the studio up. I am thinking about a gas service since I am using so much propane. Maybe I will look into it this summer?

I want to post pictures of my shop but I can’t figure out how to on an I pad. I want to show the metal kitchen prep table I use for my American lathe. The table the lathe is on is all metal, stainless, and has a 3 in tall lip that I set facing me. It prevents tools from being pushed and pulled off the table by the hoses or careless multitasking. Look up kitchen prep tables online, the one with the lip is much better.

There have been a lot of changes since I took this picture, but this photo does it justice enough. In the last two months, I have swapped my Carlisle for a Mirage, re-designed the way it's mounted to the table, replaced my trusty old bricks for a purpose-made rack for holding vertical rods and tubes, the filming rig is much more complex... Lots of changes, but still basically the same.
