receiving cremated remains over state lines via usps?

someone i don't know contacted me via glassartists.org regarding making a memorial pendant. i would guess that there is nothing illegal about it....whatcha think?

I can't imagine it would be illegal, but I really have no idea. It could be a new gov't crackdown on glass blowers smuggling creamated remains via pendants across state lines. God knows it's quite a racket.

have the customer vaccum seal the cremains so no loose ash leaks out of the envelope, that way there is no chance of being accused of being a terrorist.... treat that shit like weight

I know it use to be illigal to send them ups or fed ex.. I do not recall usps policy.
If you know the person is straight you should probably be ok. ( I cant imagen a dog indicateing over human ash)

UPS or FEd EX won't mail remains, I have recently found out. If they don't know what they're shipping they will. I think there are special couriers for it though.

I'd go for it, I made a vial for the same purpose for someone as a keepsake...

I bet they have problems with it because of insurance, I mean, how do compensate someone for losing their deceased father? At anyrate I think you should tell the customer that it is shipped at their own risk, both ways. Other than that do it up. Ive made a few pendants w/ashes and had them set in silver for people. They liked them a lot better than some urn on a mantle and the whole family made orders after they saw the first one.

What they don't know won't hurt them. As long as you're not shipping pounds of the stuff, it should be OK - it's not like it's a shipping hazard for them. Just seal it up tight and you'll be set. Go ahead and label it "Mt. St. Helen's Ash - May 18, 1980" or something, if you prefer... If you get fined/arrested, though, I never said anything.

My grandmother died recently and she had her body donated to science, after they were done with the body, they cremated and couriered the ashes back to my grandpa.
