pardon my ignorance but what is this used for?

It's for holding GL threads. So you have a threaded glass blank that you screw into one of these and then you rip off the prep and put it on a piece like a terp jar or a water bottle. It's just for adding threads to pieces

It's a hand tool on a blowtube but I do make them for the lathe too
