hey wasnt sure where to post but heres the question

im building a new studio and im just im debation of my vent setup, rightnow there is an 8' chimny duct running 3 feet up thru the roof, my fan is 22' and blows like heck, i went to the metal fab place and asked them for a quote on a reducer from 22''-8 and they said they would do it, i was thinking is this not going to work out with such a reduction ? myself i think its going to suck like mad but i guess the only way is to hook it all up and light some insence.

lemme know what ya think

I think it will depend on your fan. How many cfm is it? If you have a powerful enough fan...I think it should work out (though my opinion is not one of an expert.) Let's see what other people have to say. We'll get a little mass debation goin on :rollin

a 22 inch fan, sounds like the propellor looking fan type. those fans don't do well being reduced/ducted. if it's oversized to begin with, it might still draw enough, but it'll be stressing the motor. (not sure how much stress)

the squirrel cage type fans are meant for being ducted.

hooking it up and checking it is probably the easiest way for you to find out what it'll do.. but it is probably the more expensive route in this case. a hvac pro should be able to look at the fan and the reduction and tell you if it's a good idea or not. (it prolly isn't =( )

well, got the quote from the matal fab guy for the reduction piece, 240 bucks, seems a little steep to me. so im all out of ideas now, probly going to wait for my pops to get home and we'll try and figure something out. i tryed to find the cfms on the fan, but it doesnt show anywhere. hummmmm

for 240 you could buy a squrill cage fan and duct it your self. your won't work unless its on the other side pulling not pushing air into the reducer. even that way isnt a good idea though.

ok guys hers the situation im tryign to figure out what the hell to do, the new space ive got has a 8 ince chimny running 3 feet thru the roof, theres this fan sitting there, its off a heater, 22" im debating the best way to set up a vent. now im guessing that its now going to work blowing up thru the reducer, so if i got a 12" squirrel and hung that above the bench with a reducer going 12-8? the walls are cement building bricks. ive got a few days and many options. i dont know here...

Try going to a heating and cooling place, and try to buy a fan out of an old furnace. they all use squirrel cage fans, this is how I have gotten all my fans, people replcae the units just because the furnace is not "Energy Star" which does not mean the fan is toast. Reducing that down to 8" will be pretty easy, and the whole deal should be A LOT cheaper than $240. Plus it will work good too! make sure to get a 110V fan and you will have to put a plug on the fan, but that is pretty basic (green=ground, black to the darker screw, and white to the lighter screw of the plug)
