Just curious if any of you use a sofietta (the cone shaped puffer tool) when blowing with boro?

ive always wondered about this myself i think there are a lot of crossover techniques that can be taken from the hot shop and applied to boro like useing a gott steamer pad or paper pad to shape the glass it works great and gives u a nice hands on feel and much more dexterityl than a graphite paddle ever will

I guess in a way I have and didnt even know it. Sometimes when doing reversals, after I pop a hole, punty up, and take the blow tube off, I use a cold tube to blow into the new hole to even up that side where the blow tube was. If that made any sense, I think its the same kind of thing.

^^^thats the best IMO way to do versals I complete the final side of the spral with a tube in mouth and a punty on side of the completed spiral!! I have one that is made with the tip of a 5/8 graphite reamer it so nice for when doing a flared foot, it is about as long as a small claw grabber.

I use a cold blow tube too. works great for rounding that last termination.

i use one of the large furnace puffers all the time. they're particularly good if you open your bubbles with diamond shears (which i recommend at least knowing how to do).
i also use wooden parchoffi's soaked in water for a large reamer

I use a J.M puffer on larger vessles. (its more of a emergency tool than anything) other wise I use a cold blow tube.
When I do reversal's I use a cold blowtube (like matt was saying) but the sofietta only gets used on big vessle type stuff (and only when needed, ie I dont plan on useing it when the vase is being made, but if I have a area soften and "fall" in a little, thats when I grab it)

I use one for reversals, but I also use it when I get a crack in the mouth piece of a spoon when I'm rushing pulling points off. I just stop it from running, cook it, and then use the carb to blow through. It's a very handy tool. If any one needs a sweet bamboo handled one ( curved or straight) the guys at public scientific make'em, and they are superb. 336-934-2189
