In other news, the 4th Annual Eugene Flame-Off was last weekend in Eugene Oregon, which is just 45 minutes north from my studio/home. I've missed the last two years due to scheduling conflicts; I'm usually in Pennsylvania at AGI when the Flame-off is going. This year I opted for the Wheaton/NJ trip instead of AGI which conveniently opened my schedule of the Flame-Off dates.

The event and competitions started on Friday bright and early. 8 work stations were set up inside the school where lampworkers competed in five categories: Sculpture and Goblet, Team Sculpture and Goblet, Lathe, Wearable's, and Marble/Paperweight. A complete list of winners should be available on the EGS website, but I'll save you some searching and let you know right now how I did...I finished 2nd in the marble/paperweight category! I had so much fun with this event! I admit, I was kind of nervous at first, with the competing atmosphere, and not knowing what to really expect...but after all was said-and-done, I was pretty confident I did well overall, and I had a lot of fun. There were a lt of really nice entries and I'm sure it wasn't easy for the judges! I was scheduled to work right next to Matt Geisler (http://www.eugenerain.com) of Eugene Rain, who is a close friend, and because we've worked together numerous times before, it made me feel right at home while working. Matt took third by the way (in the marble/paperweight category), with a huge and bright flower marble, and Sabina Boehm (http://www.glassbysabina.com) took first; her marble was a beautiful butterfly atop a colorful flower. I didn't get great pics of the marbles up-close, which was my one regret.

Saturday night there was a huge party at the school with a live band and tons of lampworkers running around. It was grea to see the old familiar faces, and put names to new ones. There was also open torch demo's going as well as a few last-minute fixes for some competitors. We didn't even get home until after 2 am.

I arrived at the school early on Sunday morning to find them staff serving mamosa's. Nothing like a breakfast burrito and a few mamosa's to help cure a late night party hangover...lol. They opened the doors at 1pm so the spectators and artists could vote on the People's Choice Award. There was so much amazing work to be seen - we were all anxious to see what the others had made. Heck, I wanted to see what I made! I was in such a rush to get it into the kiln after I finished, I didn't really check it out...lol.

All-in-all, it was a great time! I wish AGI and the Flame-Off could eventually be booked on different dates so I could attend both. It's gonna be hard to choose again next year! If you are interested in seeing my marble or purchasing it, I have donated it to the Eugene Glass School Benefit Auction. Please see their site for more details. •N8•
