It's a sad day in history THE Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said today.

It is understood he was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest and reportedly into his heart .

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary when the tragedy occured.

The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) was called about 11am (AEST) and an emergency services helicopter was flown to the crew's boat on Batt Reef, off the coast near Cairns, with a doctor and emergency services paramedic on board.

Irwin had a puncture wound to the left side of his chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Irwin's body is being flown to Cairns.

Tasmania Police this afternoon confirmed his wife Terri was travelling in the state at the time of the tragedy.

A spokeswoman said police had made contact with Mrs Irwin and "passed on a message relating to the death of her husband".

The Irwins have two children - a daughter, Bindi Sue Irwin, eight, and a three-year-old son, Robert (Bob) Clarence Irwin.

Steve Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".

In an sad twist, it has been reported that his new documentary was aimed at demystifying the stingray.

Irwin's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery.

He has also starred in movies and has developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.

Tributes have already started pouring in for the larger-than-life character.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who used a photograph of his family at Australia Zoo for his official Christmas card last year, hailed Mr Irwin for his work in promoting Australia.

Irwin was heavily involved in last year's "G'Day LA" campaign.

"The minister knew him, was fond of him and was very, very appreciative of all the work he'd done to promote Australia overseas," a spokesman said.

A Tourism Queensland spokeswoman said the death was shocking and paid tribute to Irwin's "enormous contribution" to his adopted state.

"I don't think we could even estimate how much he brought us through his personality and his profile and his enthusiasm about Queensland," she said.

That is very sad news...I have enjoyed watching Steve on T.V over the years. He seemed to be a real genuine person who had a great zest for life. Watching him wrestle with deadly cobras and giant crocodiles never ceased to be entertaining. This is a great loss and I can not imagine what his wife and kids must be going through.

I have said for years that Steve Irwin would die young... but I always thought it would be something like a poisonous snake or a particularly quick croc that would get him... not a stingray. It is too strange and very sad. My 13 year-old step son is in shock.

It is all on tape that they may release...

I heard he actually pulled the f'ing thing out of his chest right before he died...

He was hardcore....

Sucks for his kids. It's a tough call for a dad... a balance between living life's dream and being responsible enough to make sure you are there for your kids...I am glad I found glass years ago. I put away most of the dangerous sports for glass. I was just jumping off 25 foot cliffs though lol....The boy loved watching.

Very sad, I hope the video does NOT get released, does anyone really want to watch someone die? Especially one that was such a public figure, I've heard views that we have the right to see it cuz he would want it that way, I don't know, seems very morbid and unnecessary. I hope the conservation efforts he started will continue in his abscence.

The whole country is in shock by this news.

I agree with some I thought he would die from a crock or snake bite, not in the ocean. I guess he was really out of his element in the water. Couldn't move quick enough to avoid danger.

Very, very sad time indeed.

He did so much over here for the environment and put most of his money into buying large areas of land for wildlife.

The footage of his death has been released. It's so strange. He wsn't provoking the Ray or anything, it just seems to have lashed out and the strike was right in his chest.

He was/is a Legend.

Rainbow Bridge is a place of both peace and anticipation as departed pets
await their beloved owners. There are plenty of things to keep them
contented while they wait: trees you can't get stuck in, endless meadows,
splashing streams, thickets perfect to hide in for pounce-attack games.

But one day the residents noticed some rather...unusual newcomers arrive.

The koalas and the kangaroos slipped in rather quietly, but then came the
bearded dragons, the skinks and the goannas. The influx of snakes startled
an entire family of cats up a tree. Pythons, cobras, tiger snakes, brown
snakes and even fierce snakes. There were so many at one point, it seemed
the ground itself was alive with
writhing. A burly wombat shouldered his way through the crowd and plopped
down in a shady spot, barely missing a Jack Russell terrier who yapped
indignantly as he abandoned his position.

And then the crocodiles showed up.

Finally, a Great Dane managed to get up enough nerve to approach one of
the reptillian giants.

"Um....excuse me," he said hesitantly. "But why are you all here?"

The croc dropped her jaw and laughed. "Same as you, mate," she said.
"Waitin' for someone who loved us."

The dogs, cats, gerbils and other "typical pets" looked at each other in
confusion, then at the plethora of weird, ugly and downright deadly
creatures assembled. Who on Earth could possibly love some of those faces?

"I see him!" shouted a green mamba from his vantage point in one of the
trees. A cacophony of squeeks, hisses, bellows and roars erupted as the
mob surged forward toward a lone human walking across the field toward the
bridge. The other animals managed to catch a glimpse of him before he was
overwhelmed by the crowd.

"CRIKEY!" he shouted joyously right before he was bowled over by the
wombat.

"Well I'll be," said a Persian as she tidied up her fur. "It's that Aussie
my human liked to watch on TV. Had to be the craziest human on the whole
planet."

"Oh, please," remarked a echidna as he hurried by. "Is it really that that
crazy to passionately love something God made?"

"These birds and animals and fish cannot speak, but they can suffer, and
our God who created them, knows their sufferings, and will hold him who
causes them to suffer unnecessarily to answer for it. It is a sin against
their Creator." - George Q. Cannon
