I have an opportunity to purchase and older model saw/lap grinder. Here's my question...the saw looks like a small table saw blade....it is a diamond saw. I figure I can cut glass with it, but not do any great cuts with it. the lap grinder has a 1" grinding wheel and then a 6" polishing wheel. Does anyone have any experience with either of these????

yeah.....sure...I make a few assumptions: You say it's a 1" grinding wheel... you mean 1" wide and say.... 4-8" diameter, mounted vertically on a horizontal arbor shaft, with a 6" flat / foam backed leather polishing head on the end.... right?

The saw is great for cutting down large rod into manageable sizes.

The grinding wheel is great for removing punty marks from anything. Depending on the grit you have you may not get a nice smooth finish. 120 is very corse, 220-480 is what you really want for fine sanding/grinding.

The polishing pad is great for polishing glass (you'll probably need more than one head) use Cerium oxide and a leather buff.

...without pictures, or more detail tho, it's hard to say if you have anything worth the hassle.

...if you're looking to do facets this isn't enough. It's a good start, but not everything.
