sorry for repost.... not sure how to actually delete my original thread (though we could kill our own threads?)
anyways....
Hey guys.... anyone here have the capability to make a large plasma globe, in the 24 to 36" range?
I'm thinking 5 gal beaker blown into a sphere.... the mouth would make a nice seat for the support post, wire, filling, etc.
Needs a hard seal, pref. argon filled.
Anyways.... quote some prices, I know it's not cheap. PM me if you want.

20 or 30 liter round bottom flask with a ground glass neck and a ground stopper work well for some thing like that. You can get a stopper and put your support post, wire, filling stem, etc. on the ground glass stopper. Then when you vacumm it out the stoper will seal and become permanint. You can put some glue on it and its sealed for sure.
Here is a link to a page with pics of a Westinghouse "Stopper" light bulb to get an ideal of what I'm talking about.

ya you need some other medium (glue, silicone grease, whatever) to help seal glass on glass connections when a vacuum is placed on them. Especialy when the temperature is increased, teflon tape or lube is needed to keep a vacuum around 1mm/hg. But i'm not familiar with neon's vacuum needs.

meh, cook the bitch closed and save the glue.

GLASSBLOWERS DON'T GLUE PLASMA BALLS YOU SEAL WITH A RING SEAL!!
You can buy a 22 L round bottom flask blank. Come out to Tecnolux and I will help you put it together but maybe you should start with a bit smaller flask.

Bear,
I have no intention of putting it together myself... I'm looking for someone else who can do it, and wants to get paid for it....
What's a 22l flask cost + whatever it would cost to have it evacuated, filled, and sealed?
-Doug
hey grey matter,
You can get a 22000 ml florence flask ( boiling or round bottom flask, its a thousand ml to the liter) for around three hundred and 25 dollars, with a 45/50 nesk joint, not exactly shure how wide that is, but if you whant a bigger flask you can get a 72000 ml flask with a 55/50 nck for a little over a grand, the best place to get these would be from hear

I don't now where you can get it evacuated but I hope this helps, you also have to think about an easy way to get rid of the lettering on the flask, that stuff is desined to stay on at pretty high temperatures and would be a pain to grinf off. looks like it is going to cost a few bucks to do this project, have fun!!!

an easy way to get rid of the lettering on the flask,
A strong Lye soultion is the only thing I know of that will take the silk screening off of stuff.

ok so it sounds like this may be a go....
next question.
Who here actually has the means and ability to deliver something like this? If anyone here can, or knows who can I'd like to get you in touch with the group putting this display together.
The 55L flask, or larger, with an electrode and post inside (like a big ass lightbulb). Ideally you would be able to evacuate it and back fill with a custom mixture of gases, but I think the guys doing this could find someone to do it locally if they had to.
Anyways, if anyone here works in a large scientific shop lemme know so I can get you in contact with this group.

I know a Guy that has nice 22 litter round bottom flasks $240
They might be 3 neck flasks tho.
One 45/50 ground glass neck in the center and two 24/40's on the side necks.
He might have some single necks to.

But here is a place I buy most of my lab ware from.
He's got the best stuff I have ever worked with.
UNITED GLASS TECHNOLOGIES He has a 12 liter on ebay right now for $155.00 (http://cgi.ebay.com/New-24-40-12000ml-12-liter-Round-Bottom-Flask-FREE-S-H_W0QQitemZ130026020647QQihZ003QQcategoryZ26407QQr dZ1QQcmdZViewItem) with a by it now.
If you want a 50 litter 3 neck heres one for US $1,100.00 (http://cgi.ebay.com/laboratory-glass_W0QQitemZ170029113668QQihZ007QQcategoryZ1181 2QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) but from a difrent person. I don't know what kind of work he does but he has all good feed back.

Hi,
There are plenty of places out here in Vineland NJ that could make this. Ace Glass has a 30" swing glass lathe so they could make one up to 60" Dia. All it takes is Money the bigger you get the more it costs. A 72l round bottom flask is $400 retail this would be 22" Dia. One thing that you have to rember also is that this is going to be really heavy.
Here is a person that already makes globes up to a 30" Dia $9,600.00 , 24" $4,235.00, 22" $3,025.00,

yeah, thats a good statrt, thanks David :)
I think the guy I know is looking for something in the 36" range. I mentioned that it might cost upwards of $10k and he didn't flinch. He runs a non-profit that makes displays for schools and museums, so I would assume he's got a way to fund the project.
Keep the ideas rolling. I'll pass on the info about Ace glass, any others you can think of? I already told him to get ahold of Salem CC and see if they could suggest someone they trained.
