so, i'm looking for sources of different items.. all of which i would like to be high quality. i don't want to buy crap.
1hair clips with hardware that works well with glass. i'd like quality parts.
i'm also trying to find leather that's 3mm, and in lots of colors. the 2mm leather is smaller than i like. if the same store has nice findings, that'd be a plus.
please don't say that rio grande or other "buy our catalog" store.
ditto on 3mm polished hemp CORD (not twine.. twine's pretty rough)
while i'm at it.. i'm also looking for nice wine bottle stoppers that work well, and work well with glass.
thanks a ton!
pm's welcomed

My cord is from rio..the greek leather not the cheap india crap..as far as the stoppers..just got some from www.weddingcameras.com part fc 1200..you have to remove the heart (screws out) and their $1.49 each..cheapest I've seen. I just made my first bottle stoppers this week with them.
yeah rio is the best place to get leather from, plus you realy do not have to buy there catologe, just call them up, say your a student and most of the time the send you a free one, that has almost always worked for me, or if that does not work call tem up ten minutes before closing on a friday and then try and get them to send you a catologe, I have never tried to pull the last one but a riend of mine does it all the time and has never paid for a catologe.

Rio Grande has more than one catalog.... the good ones are Gems & Findings, Tools, and packaging & shipping.
there's a couple other weird catalogs that are assortments of various things from the 3 main catalogs above. When you buy something you'll be on their mailing list for a year or so. You'll have about 50 pounds of Rio Grande catalogs in that time :P
...anyways..... yeah they have good stuff...I should go there tomarrow....

Fire Mountain Gems has all the cord you want. We get ours from there. Good quality and not that expensive. We don't use real leather, so I can't comment on that, but we use their immitation leather, waced linen, and silicone rubber all the time. No complaints.

Joe..I use 2 part epoxy..the devcon 5 minute..I tried to remove one yesterday off the stopper..beat it on the cement floor..wouldn't come off...so that shit works.
also, when you un-screw the heart that comes with that stopper above..whatever I make to go on top, I usually leave a peg on the bottom of the glass piece..6mm..it fits in the hole left from when you remove the heart..just a little extra holding power, wipe the epoxy around the peg before you put it on top of the stopper.

Has anyone tried the knob inserts from www.aftosa.com ? Makes it look like you can make something on a 1/4" mandrel and put in the inserts. Pretty inexpensive.

heh.... I never buy rio grande catalogs, they're just on the table for free when you go in.... who did you talk to?
Anyways.... I could refer you or something if you want a rio catalog. PM me your info and I'll see if they'll do that?

i have only seen 3mm colored leather from a place in athens on the web, they take 4-8 weeks to deliver, and their web page isn't .. well translated.
my other source says they can normally special order 3mm color, but i'd have to buy 300 meters per color.. AND there's currently a shortage of leather/cord, so they couldn't even get that for a couple months as it were.
so... lemme know if rio really even has multiple colors of 3mm leather.
i haven't talked with anyone at rio recently.. i thought it hadn't changed since last time i checked.
if anyone wants to give me their online login info (as long as personal info isn't attached) i'd like to see what they actually offer online, since they don't let you in unless you're a customer of some sort. silly bitches.
z--seth (thanks!)
and that aftosa place does have some things i had totally forgotten about trying out , thanks!!

Does it have to be real leather? Fire Mountain has the immitation leather - http://www.firemountaingems.com/shopping.asp?skw=KWCORDIMITATIONWOVEN
And they have it in stock. We ordered some last Monday and got it on Wednesday.

Rio doesn't have an online catalog, even if you can log in. Their log in stuff is just to place orders, you have to have a hard copy of the catalog.
Rio has... in leather cord....
lots of colors of 1.8mm greek leather cord (highest quality)
Normal leather cord they have in 1, 2, and 3mm in black only in other colors they have 1 and 2mm cords
Simulated leather in 1,2,3mm
Leather cord from india (mid grade) in 4mm only, 3 colors: brown, natural, black.
a whole page of machine braided leather cord in a variety of natural colors and black.
then you get into satin and waxed cotton.
something else to consider that Rio has are the rubber cords. They look a bit like leather, don't rot, and come in like 20 bright colors.
Of course they also have all the chains and beading wire you could ever want as well.
Anyways, hope that helps

Its looking like you'll have to buy the natural 3 mm and a bunch of dye and do it yourself. Yuck.
I flipped through the rings and things catalog, they have several colors...only not 3mm..2mm why its so hard to find assorted colors in 3mm, I don't know.
I use the 2mm polished black leather..soft..not rough, shiny, and coil ends w/ lobster clasps...doesn't sound like your to flexable on the size seth...wish I could help.
