View Full Version : Pop goes the torch

I finally got a chance to fire up my Nortel Bench Burner (the one with the minor mounted on top) and it works nicely. Except for the popping.
I know my instructor once told me what causes that, but for the life of me I can't recall what it was, and more importantly how to make it stop.
I'm getting a loud pop when I turn off the gas to the minor tip, and I'm getting popping while the major is on.
The torch isn't new, but it seems to be in pretty decent condition. The regulators I replaced though with a new set from Harris.
I have flashbacks on both lines at the regulator/tank.
Is something just set a little too high pressure wise? I need to double check but I think I set the propane to 15 psi and the oxy to 5 psi.
Maybe I've got it backwards?
yeah, thats backwards. i set my propane at 5-8 psi and o2 at 15-20 psi

The pop you hear is an explosion of fuel gas. It should never happen on a surface mix like the minor or major.
Reverse your pressures: 5 for propane, 15 for oxygen. If it still happens, have the torch serviced - there's something wrong with it.

try turning off the propane first then turn off the o2

and don't turn the oxygen on first when lighting the torch.

an easy way to remember how to turn you torch on and off is P.O.O.P.
turning on-propane then oxygen, turning off-oxygen then propane
if you do it that way it souldn't pop, unless your just turning the oxy on to fast. go slow on the oxy and see if that helps

Thanks folks. Got the POOP. More than likely I've got the pressures backwards. I'm at work right now but I'll check it tonight.
Thanks again.
why is p.o.o.p. better than p.o.p.o? it seems like the o2 blows out any residual flame and it doesn't pop. also poop smells bad.

I have heard people recommending both ways. I don't see where it makes any difference as long as you turn it on propane first when lighting it. Turning it off it shouldn't matter too much which one you do first. Personally, however, if I'm just turning it off for a minute or two, I always turn off the propane last. It's easier to light again that way.

Quick funny addition....in the survey class I'm taking tomorrow night the instructor wants us to experiment with organic fusing. So should I help everyone learn POOP by bringing in a piece to fuse between the sheets of glass?
Teach recommeneded we avoid fish and rocks, but she never said anything about ironic fecal lessons :-)

"why is p.o.o.p. better than p.o.p.o?"
Well I can't stand it when my torch pops, scares the crap outa me. So, if doing p.o.p.o. works and it doesn't pop then i don't see a problem. I know that poop will not make it pop so thats the way i do it everytime.
i hate popping too, especially when the propane is running out and i want to do just a little more on e a piece, "please propane god, just let me rip off my other punty," then POP.

its simple... it has been writen about alot ... its an adaptation of the welding industry which mainly used aceytline as a fuel... its a good tech/safty procedure.
any questions any welding manual... i think theres a few free ones at repituable gas suppliers.... i know victor has one.
just remeber poop it is probabl the safest procedure.
