View Full Version : Jacks
For those that use jacks what kind/ sizes are you using. I've been on Jim Moores site an those sure do look pretty, just wondering what size actually, so many choices. Any other quality jack makers out there? I've have not been treating myself properly in the tool feild for a while an it's about to change. Thanks for any links an info yo.

I think that it is a good idea to go with the full size jacks as apposed to the or opposed...hahaha... ummmcup jacks... as the full size jacks will keep yo away from the peic.e... ya nnow large epiece. burnnnn... outch ouch... word... ok ... too jrucnk to tyoeoepe. obviouslllly .... i have some of the cheesy cheppeo gacks at the moment... they are fun though..... i would say jim moores iuf you can swing it... athey will wprobbly work for most wanything your are working. wit..... word...
I disagree with jusbag.
I had full sized Moore jacks that were unweildy for most boro applications. It was much more difficult to control the larger jacks and keep them from wobbling when moving the jack points around. I sold them and bought the smallest size Carlo Donna's and like them SO much better!
Treat yourself to CD jacks, and buy Moore shears. I have both CD and Moore cup shears and I don't find enough of a difference to warrant the extra $$ for CD shears. Sure the CD shears are nicer, but there also $100 or so more and the Moore shears seem to work almost as well.
BTW all this only applies if your using the jacks for boro. If your working softglass, get the medium sized ones. Really, eventually your going to want a assortment anyways, I've been collecting glass tools for 13 years and I feel like I have only begun to shop ;)
i have the small jim moore jacks and i got them for boro use. i think they are a handy size but i don't use them much to be honest. for one thing they are supposed to stay waxed and i find that to be a messy pain in the @*#. for opening smaller vessels carbon reamers seem to work fine.

Get the cup jacks from Jim Moore and add a couple inches to them...he'll be happy to make the custom size, the actual cup jacks are a bit small just my 2 cents.

I've got the Jim Moore cup jacks and had Jim add 3" to them for flameworking application. Love 'em. I use Carlo Donna's at my buddies hot shop and I do like the action in the a bit more than Jim's, but I don't know that they can custom a longer length like Jim does.

Cutting Edge Small Jacks... $200, and they are awesome. I like them better the Dona's. The blades are real skinny and have a real sharp edge. Plus the piece of spring steel at the end is a little bit longer for paddling lips. Plus i hear Ceserae swears by his cutting edge small jacks...

the blackjacks that cutting edge makes are really nice for opening up goblets cause there thin and small but they absorb heat way to fast in my opinion go with the carlo donas and you will NEVER regret it

carlo donna will custom make tools for you, If your ever in murano i suggest going to check him out. you will save a TON of cash....you can try and call him and order, but you might have to go through spiral arts, as they are the North american Distributor. I highly reccomend the carlo donna jack, they feel great.
So it looks like you all like the carlo jacks. As stated in some above post I think I'm gonna hold of on buying some until I can get eye to eye with this babies. Thanks for all the replies everyone. piece.
