I somehow talked my finace into wanting to make beads and marbles, she seemed pretty pumped about it so we had to build her a bench. I had a national laying around so we decided to hook it up. It was actually pretty fun to play with, works great for beads and pandants. Anyone got any used eyewear for sale??? I got a pair of dididums laying around, but i wont let her use them cause they suck the bawlz and i dont want her going blind.

Here she is with her new toy..... ;)

Nice! Mine's between my tv/stereo and computer desk which straddles the living/dining in my top floor L.A. apt! Cut the exhaust duct hole right through ceiling/roof when the mgr. wasn't looking! (Yes, itt's capped!) We don't have basements just parking garages.

jeez, how long did it take you to cut through that wall? I wouldn't even know where to begin. Well, ok, it would probably be Google, the same way I learned to get the electricity out to my shed, but still....

IF she is working soft glass (soda lime) didymiums are just fine....

Guess you really dont want to hear thoughts on ventilation system though...

Is that nail polish on the bench?

Dont think the ventialtions is good enough?? That fan moves a ton of air. It was already there, i just built a bench in front of it.

Have you done smoke test to see if it captures all the combustion by products that are coming from torch... It seems to low for a effective capture.

I wish it would have been higher but like i said it was already there. Being i can barely open the door to the shop when its running im gonna assume its fine, a hood probably would be a good idea though....better to be safe than sorry.

That fan is about 20 times heavier duty than anything in any exhaust hood I've ever seen-on par with a paint spraying system. Look at the f**kin motor on that thing! I wouldn't be surprised if the suction distorts the torch flame. Light a few incense sticks and hold em where the torch is. I bet it's fine. But you could always buy a canary or two.:devil1:

Hey Dale, are you sure about the didymiums? (sorry for sidebustin' this conversation but I wanna know what you think) I went by Drew Fritt's recommendation on AUR-92's (only $45 for the econ plastic jobs I wear over my specs). He said he switched to the AUR-92s from the didymiums when he went full time on the torch. I use a Phantom with soft glass but haven't tried didymiums. I see great detail with the AUR-92s - no fatique or strain either after several hours - you think I should pick up the didymiums for comparison?

For soft glass (soda lime) didymiums are ok... The size of torch is not the problem... The problem is temperature of the glass. Soft glass has very little UV or IR radiation because of "low" melt temp, however Boro has much higher melt point so the UV and IR radiation is much greater and require more protection than didymiums.... Think 92's are basically same protection level as didymiums but a slight bit different formula is used in the making of the initial glass used in the lenses...

IF you have didymiums use them, if not, get the 92's, they are a "improved" lense over didymiums...

Been plenty of info written on this subject if you search the forums/threads

IF you can barely open up door to shop while it is running, it indictes to me that your make up air is not suffient, I hope you have door(s) or window(s) open when torch is in opperation. Having fan running and no make up air supplied, is not proper ventialtion...

all he woulod have to do is open a window behind the benches or a door. if its sealing the door to the wall its a good thing that means no air leaks, now just open the door/window and you'll be set.

Thats exactly what i do, we have the window open and it gets plenty of air, it almost makes it to cold to be there.

;)

Thanks for the help guys, now ifi ican just find some used eyewear ill be set.

It's ironic that you are so concerned with eye protection and ventilation and yet she has the most dangerous health hazzard in the world in her hand.

Thanks Dale! It's just that I started with 92's skipping didymiums altogether based on Fritt's description of increased visibility o9f the work through and around the sodium fllare which seems great to me but no firsthand comparison between the two. For $45, especially, I'm happy.
