So Im currently studying under the maestro Cesare Toffolo in Murano. Yesterday we were chatting about misused glass terminology (at least refering to Italian techniques) by many American artists. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that the term latticino sometimes used interchangably with filligrana- name of the tech for the twisted cane- means something along the lines of mozzarella chesse in Italian. I thought it was pretty funny, because I had used the term many times in the past to describe the tech. Also, the term 'maria' means nothing in terms of Italian glass. It is just a womans name....
Ciao,
Matt
perhaps maria is a american glass name then. evolution brother.

Thanks for the info, it's always good to be as knowledgable as possible about the terminology in our craft. I know I don't want to look like a dumbass when a student looks up the use of my terminology and finds out I told him to put cheese in a tube.

Doesn't Emilio use Maria...I could be wrong, but I thought he does. And if he's not Italian, then he fakes his accent pretty well.
But thanks Matt. I think that I'm going to study with Cesare nesxt year, and I don't want to look like an ass.

Just curious, when you go study with these guys do you need to have to know a decent bit of italian?

Im just trying to spread the word... Not that latticino or maria are incorrect terms for describing the techs, they just are not Italian or Venetian. By the way, if anyone has the chance to come out here to the mecca, Id highly reccomend it-inspiration everywhere. And if you want to learn from Cesare, your only option is here in Murano. I dont think he is teaching anywhere else for another year or two. By the way, they rock the dichro out here quite well- lots of blinger pendants and goblets around town....
Matt
PS- I came here knowing about 5 words of Italian. My Italian is still pretty bad, but Im picking it up slowly. They speak a unique dialect of Italian in the Venice area- kind of a mix of Italian, Spanish and Latin, so its very hard to pick up. Cesare's English has gotten alot better over the years, and he can easily vocalize key points. Seeing him work explains alot more than words anyhow.

Ahhh, the blown kiss. That's very sweet of you. Especially right after a third degree burn like that. Why are people always burning me?
