I did some hot shop work recently. Words cannot prepare you for how hot it is when you stand in front of the furnace and gather glass for the first time. I literally thought my skin was going to boil off my face.
But, of course, I loved it and now I'm addicted to it.
Sorry, I don't know of any hot shops near you. So I'm not much help I guess....

Did you try Another Planet Glassworks in Cocoa Beach, thats Claudia and Steve Beckwith or Charles in Viera? Those are the two hot shops in Brevard. I can't remember Charles' last name sorry. You know my number, call me if you want. I wouldn't say that everybody around here just plays with boro though.

It's called nerve damage :)
I know cooks who have hardly any feeling in their hands from being burned so many times....
It's not called artWORK because it's easy now is it?

I LOVE working in the hot shop. And yea it gets hot, I was in a hotshop this summer in boston and with 2 glory holes and a furnace running the air temperature in the shop was around 106 degrees.

I had an odd experience with a hot shop myself. I took two one day classes and both times I was in there with a t-shirt near the furnace and while it was uncomfortably warm, it wasn't "ouch I need to move NOW" painful. However recently I've been taking a survey class (a little of everthing glass the school offers) and it included a couple classes at the furnace. I discovered that the back of my left wrist can't take the heat, but it only hurt in one spot. The difference? One of my cats turned on me over the summer and left a nasty 5 inch scar in that exact spot and the new skin wasn't quite as tough and weathered as the rest of it. I've got my own Harry Potter scar :-)
Thank goodness for Kevlar sleeves

You are not alone! I tore my wrist open on a fence last year and now even the heat put off by my torch makes it sting and itch really bad. Heat does weird things to scar tissue.

Your welcome to visit us here in Gainesville. We offer many classes thru the local college and hope to open our hotshop for student use in the spring. We are hot and will be blowing thru the spring art shows then a short break over the summer.

Yes Harp is right. Jax university has a great program and the director is a good friend. I can't say enough nice things about them.

Sky's place is top notch. I helped out there and was treated like family. I didn't know about furnace courses offered, that known - anyone would be doing themselves a favor to check his "spot" out.
