I'm a hot glass blower who has been working in glass full time for the last 6 years. I'm also a book junkie and by far the BEST book I've ever read on beginning glassblowing in a hot shop is Art of Fire. There is an accompanying DVD that I have not seen that is purported to also be excellent.

I TOTALLY recommend you read this book and do the exercises recommended before you step into the hot shop. Having the pipe turning skills down before you start has GOT to be huge. All you have to face then is weird tooling and unbelievable heat from all that molten mass. I know lampworkers turn all the time, but it's WAY different.

cool, ill have to see if i can find those books locally, he only runs his shop for a month at a time or so, and theres about 2 weeks left on it this month! he said i can try something tommorow!! guess hes pretty stoked to, he wants to come play at my shop while his is down! though his shop is WAAAYYY warmer than mine!!! sometimes i wonder what would be worse...dying a long painful death while suffering from cold induced arthritus or just leaving the vent off and seeing what happens!!! it was minus 30 yesturday here!!!!!!ahhhhhhhhhh!!!!
