ok heres my question ....to anyone who has an opinion on why this happened....

I made a montage ball with two reversals (momka-rainbow blue/ivy green) sandwiched between a solid color (ivy green). boxed it at 1050 for 2 hours/ then let it cool....when I took the peice out it seemed ok then it started checkinging all over one side. on just the one reversal.??????


everthing seemed even though???. I have encountered problems with forrest green(witch i would imagine has a similar formula to ivy green), but the checks, werent like that+ they were only on one side . I would post pics, but all there is left are shards.

any ideas on why this might have happened?

Something in the green color reduced to chromium?

It may have been reduced , this will cause checking in some chrome colors (and others) . It may not have even been a reducing flame , just where the piece was in the flame , some areas of the flame reduce , burn neutral and oxidize , this happens with most or all types of flame .

Also "garaging" it may cause checking , it can cause the chemicals to "pool" or grow it some glasses , Chrome based colors are known to do this relatively easy . Agua Azul is real touchy on "garaging" and reducing .

I've seen checking occur on only one side of a piece...
the side that was towards the top of the kiln.
This was GA Sage green, about three and a half years ago.

Aqua is fine, it won't make your glass check.

Most all Chrome colors are problematic. There are many different theories about why this happens but don't be fooled. I think there is almost no explanation for why this happens. This is just my Opinion and the only reason I think this is because there is times when Chrome colors work just fine then crackle crackle there goes your piece. We have had great success with our chrome colors but still have some problems here and there.

Did you ramp down the kiln or did it crash quickly?
