This thread is to show of your studio, shop, setup, what ever you want to call it.
I myself am in the midst of getting all that stuff together, and would like to see how you guys have made your set up.

Take a look around the forum, there are tons of pictures of people's space. A recent one that comes to mind is "Are you a dirty bench" that included lots of ideas on what to do and not to do.

That looping Mr. T clip is disturbing by the way *shudder*

This bench was originally made for metalworking and fabrication and I converted it into a lampworking bench. The ventilation is actually the blower from my old furnace. Eventually I plan to move all my scrap steel under the bench to another location.

Yeah, well I am a metal fabricator, all this molten glass stuff is new to me. :bouncy:

Frankly I was not happy with the hood. It was about 9pm and I was running out of argon for the mig so it is all tacked together and the seams are covered with foil tape (we were impatient). It looks like ass but functions. The backsplash is just made of sheetmetal and it's pop riveted together with piano hinges so it can fold up and be moved/stored easily should I need to fab something out of metal and need the bench.

The blower was free and the bench was already skinned. I think total cost for the rest of the stuff was a little over $100.

Nice color organization. I've done the same, but it's hanging from chains from the garage rafters- More floor/bench space. Are yours held together with huge hose clamps?

Also, I'd like to see the tool holder. Got any pics?

so the sheetmetal was about 30 bucks. My friend (a roofer) hooked it up. I cut one strip off and bent two rod rests, with the help of my shop partner and his handy bending tool. And the kiln is an Aim kiln, a two door, not the 99.

Why the mirrors, is it so's you can see if anyone is gonna creep up behind you?

and I have a marble just the same as yours in the third picture, complete with burned varnish handle heh heh -the graphite poker was just out of reach.

gravdigr
03-14-2007, 09:10 PM
The mirror is nice for seeing the end of something you are blowing in rather than using 'the force' to tell how thin your bubble is at the end.

Firekist
03-14-2007, 09:14 PM
my mirror basically IS to see if anyone's behind me. in my first shop, i had ear plugs in, and earmuff style headphones on with the tunes going. halfway through a piece i reached over to grab a reamer, and right behind me are 5 fricking people, looking through my shit.
i had no idea they were there, and it scared the crap outta me.
i blowhose, so i don't need a mirror to see anything else.

...how loud is that liquid tank when it vents inside yer shop?

Firekist
03-14-2007, 09:25 PM
phab, liquid tanks don't all vent the same, and it's easy to not have them vent at all.
some tanks do a slow leak, that's not much louder than a CC. but when they do the BIG vent.. it's loud. very loud. very scary and loud! mine are 15 feet behind me, and i've only had it vent once while i was in the shop.

i have to say.. the neighbors think it's a lot quieter when it's venting in the shop instead of outside somewhere =)

(yeah.. phab, you wern't talking to me.. i didn't post the pic of my tanks.. heh.. oh well.. i'm padding my post count!)

...thats cool seth, its always good to hear from you.
yeah i was thinking about a liquid tank in my basement but lol i dont know what to expect. id probably end up with a loud one.
ive heard the more theyre used the better as far as the venting goes but sometimes a day or 2 or 3 go by when i dont work.

Firekist
03-14-2007, 09:42 PM
often 3 days go by without venting for me. i think 5 is about tops, and that's with one of the better tanks.
find out from your o2 supplier if they will stock you with the 500psi vent laser tanks (they say laser on the side of the tank).
those tanks are almost always super high quality, and you can usually set the built in tank pressure regulator to 100psi or so.. that way the tank isn't trying to build pressure once the tank is at 100psi.. it'll build pressure naturally, but it won't be doing it on purpose.

i don't know how you'd get a 700lb tank into your basement though.. maybe you have that covered.

you can build a muffler for the tank (wrap the vent nozzle with towels and a can), or you could just pipe the vent nozzle outside.. or outside and then through a muffler.
since the tank would be inside for you.. i'd suggest running the vent hose outside.. you don't want an o2 buildup in your pad!

love the avatar btw.. i wish it were animated =)

hey hey i use the mirrors alot, popping holes, and even when blowing out the bowl section on a spoon i watch it in the mirror rather than from behind, just how ive always done it. and i have an open studio to the public so they really liek to be able to see the multiple angles. and i like to look at myself:P haha kidding.

the liquid tanks never been a problem i work every day so ive never had a vent. at the first couple weeks it builds pressure faster but once ive burned thru half it doesnt reach over 200 psi.

you can't fill a K-tank with a concentrator unless you have a micro boster like roesglass does, the cheapest one of those I have ever seen was around 4,000 dollars, to fill your own tanks you are looking at an investment of at least 8,000.

Plus by the time you get an o2 genarator big enought to hook up to a tank filling system. You should have a big enought system thet there would be no need to fill tanks inless you needed to take tanks off site. Or your using so much o2 that you needed the o2 gen to work at night to fill tanks so you would have them if needed. But then again if you needed that much o2 then you could just get a second sytem or an even bigger gen. and not have the headacks of a tank filling system.

Behind me is my surround sound stereo, bose sound system, I listen to that a lot...actually the tv is used more for listening and watching, just happened to have that video on the tripod because I recorded me making a piece, taped an old lens of dydyium over the front....didn't work out that well when I played it back, still had sodium flare.

I didn't go to great lenghts to photograph the entire shop, to the right is my pc station, around the corner is all my bases and press, and on the counter to the left is where all my little parts are in bins.

My glass rods are to the left of the bench, kiln on the right.

I find that watching tv while I work passes the time greatly, of course its more just glancing at it between welds. I love the discovery...history and A&E channels, their on all day, just mute it when the musics on.

It's good to have something else to focus on occasionally, at a different distance than your usual torching distance. Keeps the eyes working better. My husband basically wrecked his eyes by only focussing at computer screen distance for too long (too many years)- he couldn't focus without his eyes shaking. Glasses have helped... but it's a lesson learned. Of course, it hasn't changed his evil ways one bit.

I like windows and art on the wall myself. Watching the horses is nice too. Lots of music also keeps me moving so I don't get so sore from standing or sitting for too long. Gotta shake that ass... :D

I took the pic with a digital camera sitting behind the torch, that video on the tripod had nothing to do with anything. At the end of the pic, by the sink, theres a mirror. Eyes, yeah I remember and still have that piece, took the leaves and bee off, made it into a candle holder.

Behind my bench is a vent hole to the outside to exhaust from the hood above, theres a window at the end of the pic, thats to refresh the air, works great.

We bought our house 4200 sq ft. for 26K. (it was a shit hole) worked for a year everyday and put 12K into it and it appraised 2 weeks ago for 80K. Big ass changes.

you can do that anywhere. maybe not always the same price. but cheap as hell. so long as your willing to live in a shithole until your finished workin on it. thats how we got ours. payed 40 it was assessed(sp?) @ 77 before we even did any work to it. we have no idea of the final value after all work was finished cuase...uhh...well... we never finished. we got it livable and all other work has been coming veeeerrrrrryyyyy slowly. its hard to find time and money w/2 kids, 2 dogs, a dude on the couch (hes relatively new) and us both workin full time & torchin in our spare time. all in due time though.:twitch:

Hahahaha no, not anywhere... we paid $175 for our shithole, and that was a SCREAMING deal for our area... my sister paid $220 for hers, six blocks away, and it's so bad it's not legally livable. The area is getting nicer but when we bought this was the "ghetto". We've put $100k into our house and the front porch is STILL falling off, the upstairs has a big fucked-up room in the middle, and the ONE bathroom is... indescribable... but we're out of money and can't even think about doing anything with it for a few years. So yeah, it's all relative... I'm just thinking, damn, we should sell this thing and buy a nice house somewhere living's cheap... except I love Portland and I would hate to leave. yep, i think that's what chris meant. setups like that can be adequate. not optimal in my opinion but adequate.

kalera, i party in plenty of smaller towns where you can buy a BRAND NEW 3 bedroom house for 160,000.

all you paid for was the dirt under your house. (location). I also go to plenty of places where 300,000 gets you a shack.

sorry. I will be glad to explain what I meant. To me it looks like the ducting wouldnt pull all the fume out if you fume. I would recommend getting a hood to go over your stations with the ducting hooked up to that, so you can capture the fume in the hood and send that shit out. I'm sure that some fume gets away from those ducts and hangs out in your shop for a lil bit. and you definatly want to get all the cadmium out immediatly. that stuff is real bad for you to breath in. I would reccomend getting a hood above your stations, thats all. your fan is mos def good enough, I'm sure. hope this cleared things up, sorry for the stupid post. just me bein me, a dumass.

Yeah, location location location, as the real estate agents say! and we do hav a sweet location. But damn, this is Oregon and there isn't anywhere within 200 miles of a metropolis (well, THE ONLY metropolis) where you can buy an even OK house for less that 200k, and it kind of sucks. And I wouldn't live in new construction if you paid me... too much offgassing, too many unknowns, and too many horror stories.

It really does depend on the strength of the fan sucking shit out. A hood is great for a lower-powered fan, but if he has a 3800 CFM blower then a hood is just visual icing.

lol. when i said cheap as hell, i meant that in relativity to the area.
it is possible in all parts of the country to grab up property for nothing more than what the previous owner owed in taxes. if its not much your good to go. auctions and stuff can be good but it depends on who else s lookin at your house and how much they'll pay. at the moment its a buyers market, you could probebly find great deals in most areas (again in relativity to the area). but good luck selling. you can have my house.i mean shit, you might as well just come move in....everyone else does. that room though, thats some shit. we had to completely gut our house and rebuild. and like i said, we're still not done. so it gets really irritating n makes me wanna burn it. its so uncomfortable to not be happy with your home, i feel your pain.

Thanks for the input guys. I really do feel like the vent is adequate based on previous shops I have worked in with similar ducting. My fresh air source comes from directly behind me, and when I do fume(which is rare) I block the vent on the far right to get even better suction.

I remember henry gave a presentation at AGI last year on optimal ventilation and it was concluded that a hood is not the best method of limiting your exposure to the metal vapors. Unless of course the hood had three sides coming directly around your immediate workspace.

The reason I like the duct method is that if your fan is really powerful then you can feel the air coming around your face and being drawn away up in to the vent. (It really sucks in winter).

Anyways, I don't think it is the best possible setup either but I do think it is safe and drastically reducing my exposure. Thanks for lookin out though

bigles... what is optimal ventilation in your opinion?
Thanks guys, J

I like a lot of air moving and lots of space. Ducts like that are in the way. But your shop probably couldn't even fit two stations the way I like em.

I want to be able to feel air moving. Not just where you stand behind the torch but five feet back as well. Actually everywhere in the shop.

There are two reasons to ventilate. Exhausting hazardous fumes and heat dissipation. You only need adequate ventilation to have a safe work environment. But you won't have a comfortable environment without badass ventilation.

Yeah, that's why I was asking if prices were still that low in Illinois, because they're not here. :) This is my second house (we needed more room) and one of my friends house-flips as a side job... the last two she got she only paid $140 each for but they needed to be gutted. I was just thinking of the simplicity of using my equity to pay for a house in full, no more payments!

I do love my house and my neighborhood, though, so it would be hard to move... but damn, if I could have a paid-for house I'd barely have to work!

Here are pics of our new set-up. 3 stations, 5000 cfm axial fan with 8 foot ballast box. I made some adjustments from my last set up. Extended the over hang by 2', raised the ceiling a bit and trimmed my exhaust opening to increase velocity. They are actually a bit smaller than my previous openings, but didn't have the velocity I needed for powder work and such. The fan is 3 speed and each station has an exhaust flap so I can only vent the stations being used. Been breaking it in for a couple of months and I'm loving it.

Measure the window, you could get a squirrel cage fan or centrifugal blower and run a duct to that window from your ventilation hood. Ventilation does cost a few hundred bucks but it's not something you have the option of skimping on if you want to blow glass and be alive.

If you did knock out that window so it doesn't just half open, you might be able to get away with an attic fan mounted in there, if you point your bench that way and work out a custom hood.

edit: low cost fans: attic fans start around $50 from major hardware stores, other options sometimes found locally by asking hvac / AC installers and asking for a blower from an old furnace or AC. UTSFE

bracket on the handle? i dont think my torch has a handle, im not sure what your referring too.

the elements for my annealer im going to order from Jopppa once i cut grooves in the bricks. i've probably put about ........ well i dont really know i paid about $70 for all the metal and that includes metal side panels not in the picture. i havent paid for the frax yet i used a whole 40' box of it. i dont know how much it costs. the bricks i got for free out of an old kiln i tore apart so thats pretty sweet. and the welding i traded for some glass. all i have left is to finish my punty door, cut groves for the elements and wire them up and plug it in! i cant wait.

you save a lot of money making your own kiln but it takes a long time. i proll could have made up the difference in like a month making bigger better stuff out of a new store bought kiln. but its real fun to build your own equipment.

I've built half a dozen or so kilns so far and and scored all the elements from Dudley at Joppa. http://www.thegldg.com/forum/showthread.php?p=202683#post202683

A quick fix to mount your elements is the donut system Dudley shows on his website (http://www.joppaglass.com); mount the element on a piece of board and secure that to the wall/roof of your kiln.

yeah i have been thinking about doing it that way. i also heard about using quartz rod to put the elements around and securing that to the walls. i guess it depends on the cost, i know what its going to take to carve slots in the bricks.
do you think if you have the elements hanging out there you might get more relative heat out of them because the whole element is exposed rather than having 1/2 of it buried in the bricks? also i wonder if the elements would be more subject to damage than if they were buried in the brick. not that it will matter as much because my new kiln will be much larger so i wont be as cramped for space. so putting stuff up against the walls/elements wont be such a concern. so have you done the elements this way? do you prefer it? why?

also that bracket for the national is just to hold it there, i can also use it as a bench torch with that thing, for some reason i though you were talking about a handle on my red max LOL.

so yeah i was just looking at the joppa sight and its got pros and cons of doing it both ways i think im just going to drill the bricks. i was going to do it on a table saw but they have and illustration for doing it on a drill press and i have one and it will be much easier to clean afterwards. i think my elements will last longer this way. some people would scream if they saw the inside of my little kiln, its got elements hanging down everywhere LOL its scary to reach into sometimes.

on a side note; Joppa is good people

Definitely, Dudley Gibberson is a really helpful bloke.

Sounds like you done made up your mind how you'll do it and I was just searching over at Craftweb for the pictures Ben Rosenfeld put up how he routed the bricks on his drill press but I can't find the fucker, sorry mate.

The reason I put elements surface mounted is that I want to pay the current to heat the inside of the kiln, not the insulating mass. The hot face of the kiln is vermiculite board and ceramic fibre blanket secondary insulation. Just my preference, light and efficient.

Hi:
I'm using facebook for free photo hosting, here's a link to my shop set-up. 1200 sq ft wooden barn-type shack with a 12' ceiling and no heat. In that space I have 7 torches, 3 diamond saws, wet sander, sandblasting booth, 9 kilns for slumping and fusing, 2 furnaces for liquid, 5 annealers, glory hole, 2 furnaces, etc. Most of the equipment is on wheels, so I can store it when I'm producing something that doesn't need it.

So this is my studio which my buddy and I run right outside Austin. Its a total of a 1000 sq ft. Now we use about 500 sq ft for studio work space. Right now 7 stations running with individual reg hookups, vent fan, positive air flow, cable t.v., surround sound, in table glass trash shoots that connect to contained trash cans, and hard lined gas lines to regs. These pictures show the two sides of the shop and the individual station is mine. The middle of the shop is nothing but kilns. Soon we are expanding into the next room (which is 250 sq ft) with a 6 station round table set up with a center vertical ventilation hood. Looking forward to that. Seems like no matter how much space you have or think you will need, you always need more.:puzzled:

Ok heres my setup, if you dont notice its in a garage , anyway as you can see im running a premix redmax, and that fan in the wall is a 1000cfm dayton blower, the cart is full of all sizes of clear and some color tubing and you can see most of it still in wrappings as i just got all of that last week, and the drawer cart has all my colors. You can probally also notice i have a aim bead kiln yet have a nice paragon controller worth about as much as the kiln, i blame sundance for that one. i also got a tv in there to watch lampworking videos or so others can play games instead of watching me the whole time. And That Drawer cart is FULL of glass color rods. so heres a bunch of pics

It's not mine, I rent space in a shop. There are 6 hoods in the room. They're all connected uptop with dutwork, which is all sucked up by an inline fan(it's frickin huge) near one of the windows(it's connected so it pushes out the window). I think the duct is like 18 inches? Yes it's sheet metal, I'll take some more pics tomorrow if I remember.

If I was to do it now looking at the setup in the shop, I'd put the sheet metal on the inside of the box. Only cause wood isn't very fire resistant. I also wanna get some more party backer to cover the sheet metal on the bench.......

I love my shop it has taken 5 years to get this far. I use furnace blowers, you take a blower build a box cut two holes in it put the blower forcing out one holes and the other you connect to your hood with flex. sometimes you can get a free blower fan from a heating and cooling company just ask if they have any old systems they have replaced. They just let me take one out of a system that was going to the dump free back up with three fan speeds on the motor

Blacksheep
04-11-2008, 10:56 AM
its an inline 10" can max 1000+a bit cfm ,the fan itself (motor) is fairly quiet but the air it moves sounds like a jet stream not so quiet .
it will be joined into a table enclosure one day and a little ducting will quiet it down a little
for the calculations with an enclosure 1000 cfm is right on for the opening size
it actually works real well now but will be better and more focused enclosed.

Glass Welder
04-11-2008, 11:49 AM
I thought I knew a can fan when I saw it, haha. I saw those on display at a expo in australia they are pretty sweet, that is what I thought they were called though was a vortec but, I was thinking of the vortex style that the rep was talking to me about. He had that can-max setup with a beach ball hovering over it/spinning in place. This was to show the true efficiency of that fan, it blows out the exhaust end in a vortex(spinning like) straight line) thus the beach ball stayed put. this vortex and straight line action cause less turbulents in the duct work=more efficient..= Sweet Fan. Just figured I let you know what a good fan you got, if you didn't already know. Dude..sweeet

Blacksheep
04-11-2008, 08:38 PM
i didnt know the beachball thing or the path was spinning but i know the thing is damn powerful

Down here in Phoenix we need our space. You know how glassblowers get, they gotta stretch their legs from time to time. We use a 5000 cfm upblast fan to circulate the room 5 times a minute. Benches are equipped with garbage shoots and quick connects. A swamp cooler is mounted to the roof and spills down on the shop from above. I believe the combination of safety and comfort make a productive work environment. More pictures are available on glasspipes.org under the No Stress Studio. http://www.GlassPipes.Org/NoStress

hey G, no, not graphite wheels, they're very hard rubber and wood construction. They're wheels I jerried together in a hurry when I had to do a demo and didn't have my cast aluminium ones handy. I only ever use them as a rest when I'm pulling points off a tube ... I have another set made from castor wheels, but they move too much to be very useful. I wouldn't use graphite. I think I'd be too worried for the graphite to chip and break and crunch up fine on the axle from the weight of a length of tube (I use 40mm x 5mm a bit for big pieces).

Well, I have a pretty good system for minimizing particulate exposure. Just about everything is housed on a tray, or some sort of modular bench component for easy removal.

Every few days (usually when I switch product lines) I tidy up the trays, clear the bench and shop vac immaculate. Crucial: I've added a lengthy extension hose so the shop vac remains outside my workspace at all times.

Then I use a wire mesh screen over the end of the vac nozzle so I can vacum out all the trays even while they are filled with rods, prep work & whatnot.

here are some pics of my new set up. i am a newbie but am very serious. this is attached to my woodshop which is my actual profession. it is not real big but i got plenty of room for now.
i have not actually used my hotshop as i am just getting it up and ready to run.
i have been on the torch taking up my time instead.
i still need to get my big vent hood set up but i am only using a lynx right now since my delta is at gtt getting cleaned. what i have for ventilation works well for the torch i am using.
i still have another workstaition i am going to set up that will have access to the kilns and be set up with the lynx or a cc. (p.s. i am going to sell the cc or a redmaxx if anyone is in the market.) i will probably keep the other one as i plan to rent shop space and maybe a torch with it.
i am using a pro-8 oxy generator and it is badass. i can rage the delta with not a problem at all. it should handle the delta and lynx at the same time.? hope so at least. the only problem it is hell on my piston compressor and my wife is bitching about it running all the time and making a ton of noise. which it does, so i am getting a rotary screw type this week to get the system running as good as it gets. and quiet as hell. you can actually talk normally next to this thing while its running. sweet.
i still have to fill up my color bins and get my tools more organized but it is working for now. i have quite a bit of glass. some will be for sale soon.
my plans have always been to bring glass to my wood sculpture and i have some serious ideas that i am planning to use, but my skills are still far short of my ideas. i will be hitting you ass kicking lampworkers up for some hints on particulars in the near future.
let me know what you think.
i am off to melt something.

Jay - what a sweet sweet setup! And yes, judging from your pictures, I'd say you are very serious about your glass! Way to go!

Best,
Chris

thanks for the compliments guys. i think it will be a nice place to create when i get it finetuned.

the glory does have doors they are just blocked with the heat shiel sitting right in front. i just set it up for pretty pics.
as for the furnace, i have the little aim electric furnace kiln in the corner of the pic that holds a 40 pound pot. the person i bought the set up from did not use it much but said the furnace did alright for a start up/ small stuff. that is what i need for now.
i got a few hundred pounds of spruce pine batch that i am going to play with. i also plan to do some casting for stands on my wood pieces so i got a lot going on to say the least.
money is gone at this point so i am not getting anything else for a while after this new compressor i am putting in.
got to sell some stuff to pay for anything else, i guess that means i got to build something........
as soon as i get the ventilation complete i will take new pics.
thanks, jay

Here's some pics of my setup

My desk is the middle one. This is my first studio that I've actually had some space to move around. It's nice and easy to keep clean!
