2007 SPRING FLAMEWORKING WORKSHOPS

February 7 - 9 - "Critters and Varmints"

February 21 - 23 - "Graal From A to Z "

March 7 - 9 - "Advanced Vessel Design and Construction "

March 21 - 23 - "Advanced Freeform Sculpting Techniques"

April 4 - 6 - "The Magic of Metal II"

You are cordially invited to participate in one of the above listed flameworking workshops taught by nationally acclaimed flameworker Robert A. Mickelsen at his personal studio. These workshops are designed to enhance your knowledge of glass whatever your experience level may be. While I will supply everything you will need: materials, tools, and safety equipment, along with extensive hands-on instruction, it is recommended that you bring whatever equipment you feel necessary to work to your best ability including your own burner (I have Carlisle CCs), tools, didimium glasses, etc. Come with an open mind, a sense of humor, and a willingness to work hard in the interest of learning something new.

Classes are limited to eight students each and will be filled on a first-come-first-served basis. Tuition can be paid using checks, money orders, MC/VISA, or Discover. You may reserve your space with a deposit of 50% of the tuition price. The balance will be due no later than thirty days before the first day of the selected workshop.

Course Descriptions

February 7 - 9: Critters and Varmints II!

This class will explore freehand sculpting techniques to make small but intriguing creatures in glass. Students will work at their own skill levels on subject matter of interest to them and develop skills and techniques suitable for success. Subjects will include but are not exclusive to insects, spiders, lizards, frogs, fish, birds, etc. This class would be an excellent introduction to borosilicate glass for those who are accustomed to working with soft glass. Open to anyone with one or more years of experience.

$450

February 21 - 23: Graal From A to Z

This class will explore the challenging technique of graal to create images on the surfaces, both inside and out, of glass lampworked vessels. Students will create masks using photosensitive emulsions and etch them through layers of colored glass onto their pieces. Various types of vessels will be explored from wide bowls to tall vases. Tuition includes all materials. This class requires students with well-developed skill levels. Open to anyone with two or more years of experience.

$500

March 7 - 9: Advanced Vessel Design and Construction

This class will explore in depth the aesthetics and design aspects of various vessel forms including goblets, vases, and bottles. We will examine surface, form, and function (or lack thereof) as it relates to the glass vessel. Construction techniques of complex vessels will also be covered. This class is perfect for intermediate-to-advanced flameworkers who want to hone their skills. Open to anyone with one or more years of experience.

$450

March 21 - 23: Advanced Freeform Sculpting Techniques

This class will focus on free-form sculpture, both solid and blown. We will explore various shapes from plant forms to the human figure. We will cover construction techniques for complex sculptures. We will examine various types of surface decorations including paints and metal leaf in addition to the usual glass colors. Open to anyone with one or more years of experience.

$450

April 4 - 6: The Magic of Metal II

This workshop will focus on some of the endless variety of ways that metals can be used in concert with glass. Students will learn to apply metallic lustres, copper wire, and gold and silver foil to the surfaces of their sculptures and vessels. We will explore chemical patination techniques for copper and steel. This class will also feature a detailed demonstration of copper electroforming. For students with two or more years of flameworking experience.

Robert

Will you be doing classes for people that have less than 1 year of exp?
I live in Cape Canaveral and would love to come to some of your classes but I do not see any classes that I can attend. Until next year or the year after that. I’m just getting into Lampworking/class blowing.

Or maybe there is someone else local that you know of that I can take classes from ?

I am not that big of a stickler about this. I just don't want to have to teach you how to light the torch and how to hold the glass. If you have any experience at all you might really enjoy the Critters and Varmints class. Give me a call if you have any questions.
