So I was watching this video on youtube, and this person just murders this honeycomb pendant, the first part is good but it does not end well (in my opinion). One thing I notice is that this person was over using the padle to "re-round" his pendant and just winds up wasting time and not making it look much better. I personally prefer shaping in the flame as much as possible. I guess im just curious how many folks out there "air" marver and how many use a paddle or some other surface.

Wow, i just wasted some time watching it and he definitly murders that thing. Personally, I like my pendants to look smoooth, not lumpy. But concerning your question, i try to use the flame, pressure and gravity to shape my pendants; the forces are so much smoother. Of course, my marvering skills aren't great, but the only time i marver pendants is to clean up the loop and flatten the back/front or vice versa for the back, or press into a marble mold for shaping the front. I also usually don't make pendants that big because of weight issues, but I would have tried to do my shaping with more blowing and condensing and blowing, but hey, what do i know.

It depends on what I'm doing. If I'm rounding out a lense, I'll let gravity and heat do the work. If I'm closing a flare, I use a paddle.

i marver pretty much whenever i can, as long as it's not going to mess up the final product.
i used to "air" marver just about everything, but i've decided that's too slow for me.
after marvering there is always some "air" marvering afterwards, because i think you do get the smoothest finish, and a more even form/shape from it.
i remember trying to marver at different steps, and failing miserably.. now i can do those things that i used to think couldn't be done well.. which is why i marver more now than i used to.
both ways work imo, marvering usually gets you to the same point quicker.. also imo.

gravity and heat are usually more consistent then the human hand. But lots of techs can be "helped along" with the right tools .

A link to one of the vids.
I can see where PROPER marvering would speed things up.

I agree, there are certain times you can speed things up a bit by marvering and there are some shaping techs you can't do with just air and gravity as well as you can with a paddle. I usually have a better time rounding things by air marvering rather than with a paddle. In my opinion your piece will stay more evenly heated the less you marver with paddles and such.
