The Virginia Hot Glass Festival is fast approaching. It's a great show. It takes place at Sunspots Studio, which is a hot shop (furnace glass blowing). There are live glassblowing and flameworking demonstrations all day both days. It's an indoor show, so weather isn't an issue.
I know they are looking for more flameworkers, so if you are interested, get in touch with Doug at Sunspots - info@sunspots.com. They are looking for all types of glass - beads, pendants, fused/slumped items, etc.
I did this show last year, and I'm doing it again this year. It was the first all-glass show I have done, and it was also the most successful show of any type I have done. The buyers that come to the show know glass and appreciate it. I took 45 marbles to the show, and came home with 9.
Doug and the rest of the people at Sunspots put on a great show. Once the show is over on Saturday, they do a hot shop competition where the furnace workers do things like "longest drip" where they take a gather of glass and see how far they can have it drip without hitting the floor. They have to make a vessel with their off hand (for those of you who have never done any furnace work, you always work with the same hand - this is like writing with the wrong hand, except the pen is over 1000 degrees). They are talking about doing a competition where the flameworkers and and furnace workers collaborate on a goblet or something like that.
The best part of the whole show is that there is no entry fee. Your fee is that you make a donation to the store of $150 worth of items. I assume that the amount is going to be the same this year, but you may want to talk to Doug and find out for sure.
