It's a do-over apparently.

Hey NewMexMag,

If these specs don't protect your eyes, you'll be screwed. The money you save ($100-$200) won't cover the irreparable damage to your eyes.

There's no way to know before you buy them, unless you have a special, expensive spectrophotometer. Not the spectrophotometer they have at Home Depot for matching paint.

I tested my Phillips Boroscopes #5 against all comparable Aura Lens products(provided upon request by Aura Lens).
Guess what, you get what you pay for. The Phillips were crap compared to the Aura's. I verified what Aura Lens website has claimed on their website again and again, with the proper equipment. I don't work at that place anymore, so I can't do it for these.
I'm not saying these cheaper ones are bad, I'm saying there's no technical specifications posted for them. Aura Lens at least has that and they've been verified by an independent source.
Yes, I eventually bought the Aura's (AGW 203?) and I like them better than what I had by far.
Be safe.

I have the AUR 286 split 3/6 form aura, they are the bomb. I got the goggle 'cause 5yrs ago they did not have the biker wraps. When I get my laser surg I'll go for the 286 bikers. The AUR are the best, I could work for hours and no eye strain at all.

Hey newmexicomagma,

Yea, good point. I tested the old ones. But, I clicked on that link there, and it does provide the transmission chart for the visible light spectrum.

According to the chart it blocks out the sodium flare( that big bump in the chart just after 600 nm) but the damaging part occurs in the infrared (900nm and up). The chart seems to top out at the end.A test for that wavelength would look much different and be centered on the 800 nm and go up to 1.5 micron range.

If this all sounds like"blah, blah yea whatever", then you're right. Just read the disclaimer at the bottom of that chart. Nice, huh?

Also, take a survey. Who wears what glasses?

Hey Fredlight

So I have been working quartz with shade #5 flip ups over didymium lenses for more years then you have been alive.

You sound like a republican with all that fear info in your post.

You should worry more about how much UV your face and arms are getting then you eyes. Before the pipe industry got started shade #5 or #6 wielding lenses over didymium worked fine for the industry I don't know any blind quartz workers.

Save your rant let Mike handle that your to light.

Before you buy any eyewear, please make sure you do some homework, and that should not be limited to asking a bunch of other folks on the forum. Not that it doesnt help, but first hand educated research always helps

Make sure you find a UV chart, that will show you whether or not these shades filter in the proper range. Early phillips boroscopes did not properly filter the correct UV range, and at one time, rumor had it that phillips had originally designed them as high dollar sunglasses.

Talk to mike from auralens. you may not like him, and you may not be able to afford his glasses at the moment, but he wont lie to you. I'm a lampworker by hobby only - I am not exceptional in any technique, and dont strive to be, but when I first started I bought a pair of phillips boroscopes, and had headaches for days. Turnes out the lenses were machined like shit, and therefore somewhat distorted. Needless to say, after sending almost 200 on an affordable pair of shades, with a nice enough frame, I wound up buying a pair of auralens' anyway. Im not trying to slam boroscopes, but i can speak from my own personal experience, and desire to keep 2 good eyeballs in my head.

You can blow glass with a crappy torch, cheap chinese glass, and in an outhouse in subzero temperature - if you were really motivated. You only get one pair of eyes, without them - you cant blow glass at all.

Bear,

Thanks for reminding me. I hate to sound like a Republican. Or Mike.

I thought I came across pretty casual.

And Wow, you've been working Quartz for more than 35 years?

Much respect, aye.
