ok, i was watching tv last night, and a completley nonsenseical commercial came on-

it shows a dude blowing in the hot shop for about an entire minute with some very cheesy soft jazz music in the backround and then there's a flash of fire, followed by a flash of water, followed by a picture of a beer bottle, and the guy says "michelob light, the new look of light beer"

whhhaaaaaa???

i just happend to be on the phone with another glassblower whom i will not name, who just said, oh well i like the fact that glass is being publisized
....but is this really promoting glass? sure, a lot of glassblowers like beer, shit, everybody likes beer, but in the commercial there was just no connection between one or the other, the guy wasn't drinking beer, or holding beer or anything....and it just left me confused. im not sure why this bothers me.....have you guys seen this? does this mean anything or am i just crazy?
i did meet some guy back in like 2004 who had made blow molds for beer bottles, brewed his own beer and served it at some party i went to...that was cool...that doesn't have anything to do with this i just thought i'd throw that in....

and so i digress

opinions please!!!

Never seen it, i will keep my eyes open for it. Sound like they wanted something cool to look at like the American Express commercial with hot shop guys. "i need to ship out 40 glass bowls!" Maybe it would be cooler if he used a tungsten pick.

WORLD FAMOUS

It's all good - drunks make great customers. And marketing doesn't usually make much sense, because, well, because it doesn't really have to.

Don't you know that the crisp taste of Michelob's light is achieved by dunking a hot gather in each batch to burn off impurities?

I hate beer, have tried many different kinds from the mundane and cheap to the fancy and expensive and it all tastes nasty to me. I am not a big drinker in general, maybe a drink once a month if that, but when I do, I like cider.

i hear ya meer - i cant stand beer, or any alcohol for that matter. I'd rather consume something a bit more .... natural.

maybe their next commercial will be a re-enactment of the safety crew from chernobyl, or 3 mile island.

So wait they have a comershial on tv that encurages on the job drinking????? Nice.
Why not just have a nascar driver doing laps with a 40 in his hand. LOL

Maybe its my Just Irish roots and my work ethic. But What the hell are they doing drinking when theres work to be done? Ya I know thats ironic for an Irishman to be saying.

on the job drinkning, AND while working with compressed gasses and high temp open flame torches. And to think - a little old lady once sued mcdonalds for spilling her own hot coffe on herself.

the next one of you who gets plastered, and drops a nice molten gob of glass on your lap should sue michelob. what the hell - the guy in the commercial does it, so it must be safe, it was on tv !

see- that was the funny part to me- he WASN'T drinking the beer. nor was he holding it, or anything of the like.

he was just blowing glass, and then the beer appeared!

and then someone said " michelob light, the new look of light beer"

I just saw the commercial and thought it made sense on a couple of levels.

Superficially, the object the blower was making somewhat resembled the shape of the new bottle they're introducing. So visually, the concept flows.

Then, there's the whole contrast thing... something cold and frosty born of fire.

But I suspect the real advertising thrust of the commercial is a display of "fine handcrafted workmanship", just like their beer (yeah, sure, right). I guess you can only get so much mileage out of sparkling mountain springs, heheh.

Work and beer and clear running streams and chicks that just pop out of the bottel and are so amazed by your beer proulesness in beer picking. That they just want to do you right there on the spot because "You know the right brand of beer to drink"
But it seems the work and beer ad tie ins usealy are about the beer being an after work thing.
But I realy don't have a clue what there doing or what there angle is.

lol Maybe His shop is just like mine and they are just emtpies left by visitors that all ways seem to bring a beer bottles with them . But never take them with them when they leave.

I actully would not have a probelm if visitors drink in my shop if they would just take there dam bottels. Please!

But me my self I do drink when I feel like it if I ever feel so inclinded. I just don't feel all that inclinded to drink all the time. But when I do. I useally make that an after work thing. Tho I have lit the torch drunk one or twice just to see what it was like torching while shit faced and it just was not fun to me. to thoes that can all the power to em as far as that goes.
But weather some one can handle his drink at work or not is not even the isssue for me as much as just what it says about someone and there relationship with drinking. esp if there is not some occation going on that day or its day time on a weekday. It just tells me that Beer is a priority for that person. in all my years its allways the first thing that sets apart any one I know that is a in the gutter drunk and thoes that arn't.

Plus if someone drinks at work How do they drive home and not be drink behind the wheel ?????? LOL I can see calling the old lady up to come get you at the bar after work cause your too waisted to drive or some thing.

But hee hee calling up FROM work needing a ride home is just. Man I don't don't even know. lol lol That just goes right in the jeff the drunk bin to me.

Glass & beer - now there is a thread catching my attention. Heck you could be talking about the Egyptians - cool glass & beer was basically their bread/sustenance.

Nothing like chilling a beer in the vent spray of liquid oxy....... after Osha & the employees are gone!

come on amy, its a commercial showing a guy making the new bottle and then it says that the beer is as distinctive and has as much hard work put into it as the new bottle.

ACE
02-08-2007, 02:17 PM
the commercial i saw doesnt say ANYTHING about distinction or hard work, maybe there is two different versions.

also in the commecial i saw, he is not making the bottle- the form maybe similar- esp. the shape of the bottom, but i saw no bottle until the flash of fire when the bottle suddenly appears....

well you missed it...during that flash of fire is when he did the 'triple blown michelob reversal' that turned it into a bottle

someone please tape this and put it on Youtube. I dont do TV and I'm rarely exposed to motion propagnanda!!
Sounds funny and interesting.
I once spoke with an american off hand glass blower who had spent some time apprenticing/working in a german glass blowing factory. He told me that the only time in history the when the glassblowers went on strike is when they tried to take the beer vending machines off the production floor. Proof being that to this day the vending machines still serve ice cold beer!!!
**side note***
I too have logged many hours at the touch under the influence!! jajaja....who says drunks cant blow glass??????

Drinking beer (and safety breaks) is what sets my glassblowing job apart from my "other" job..
Hell ya I drink at the torch, but I try to keep it to 1 per hour. I can walk from my shop to my house, so thats not an issue.....

I read a book on the history glassblowing in Murano. Although the glassblowers were basically held captive on the island so their secrets could not be shared with the rest of Europe, they were treated almost as well as the nobles. Big homes, servants, lots of money, and a traditional allowance of a gallon of beer a day.

Murano gets pretty hot in the summer and for you lamp workers out there who've never experienced the heat of a non-airconditioned "hot shop", The alcohol is sweat out of you so fast you don't even feel the effects.

Typically, lampworking was a womans job and they weren't allowed the alcohol.

Beer for breakfast is quite common in the Bavarian countries- you just don't start the day without it. Maybe that's why they are so industrious. Just get the right frame of mind started and you can work hard all day. :D I could do that!
