Lookin good! You should get some of that chinese colored tube and make about ten of them with that. That way you can just fume the outside and not spend much time coloring tube and what not.

the checking of "ium" and other chrome colors (mostly greens) happens when left in the kiln at annealing temp for too long. try garaging the piece at 975 while you work and then up to 1050 for just long enough to anneal when finished. over annealing chrome colors never ends well. the sketchiest part is that it might not crackk/check for months making you think it's fine and sellable when it comes out of the kiln.

i noticed in your pic that it looks like you're using an old pottery kiln, maybe check your pyrometer? if not i wouldn't know what to suggest. winship has the best prices i've found on chinese color.

after checking my notes from henry i found that cooking too long in a reducing flame can cause the same checking problem. try turning up the oxy.

30 minutes isnt too bad at all for those man. better to have slower quality than quick jankssss...you can do outside stuff quicker by colouring up a length of tube big enough for 2 or 3 of those, then just chopping them off. kinda tricky at first cause you gotta keep it all hot, but once you get the hang of it it can be a big time saver

nice fuming for sure btw.... try hitting a light silver fume like that with just a bit of gold on top for some nice purples

PS Where you at in Nor CAL crip? I'm like a year (minus a few months during summer) into this whole glass thing. Anyways, if your Davis we have a craft center that has 7 stations with major/minors and three nice kilns. I think it's like $80ish for a three month pass, plus a dollar an hour for oxy, you should check it out...

from what i can tell from the video you are running it about the same i would but i havent worked on a majorminor or redmax in years. im sure somebody here could be alot more help. but dont be scared to rage it tho i my opinion, pay attention to what the candles are doing. when they start going crazy i would back off.

Ok so i tried my 3rd bub yesterday, i think i did my first reversal too, and its a few diff sections for practice and wasnt too bad xcept for the crooked bowl 'ERRRRRR" whatever only a waste of a few hours right, and i made the stem bout 1/2" too short, n should have encased teh blue red part cuz i think it looks like asss, but itll still work any ways heres the pics.. .

are you putting the downstem in before or after you weld on the stem? i like to do it before i put the piece together so that i know that it's right (you can always make a new bucket if you have to). also, if you have a slightly uneven push you can make that the front or the back so that it covers the mistake.

it takes a couple tries to get the downstem/bowl push right. you might consider making a half dozen on clear so that you can see your weld well and you/re not wasting work on the ones that don't come out. if you get a good one you can still fume it and use/sell the thing.

i like the reversal section by the mouthpiece. you're very ambitious with your work. it helps you progress quickly to let your reach exceed your grasp. stay at it mang!

basically what i did was have the can section and teh mouth pice on a point and then welded them together b4 i put any holes in it, then i poped the top hole and droped in a stem and that welded in nicley and the hole closed up to perfect with a lil tungstun poke, then pushed the bowl in and straightened the stem, then carb hole, probally not the right order but it seemed right

already open I jstu pop hole for stem and drop in a slightly flaired stem and weld it up and thickin it and the hole shrinks down then i jsut use the tungston to keep it the right size then kiln it then, heat around and push bowl

i jacked that one up last night i was buzzed up on a late night blow, my weld to the can was all janky tooo, i think nextime if i fuck somethin up ill jsut tear it off and go again to fix it right

those are pretty G for the first couple. i made one bubbler when i first started, managed to keep it from cracking too horrible, went to my buddies, packed it up and rested it on the table. just as i was about to grab it and spark i, he put his foot on the edge of the table and it tipped and shattered lol. have you tried blow ins yet? there the best! they use the smallest amount of color and have ill color gradients and shit. im gonna have to try a bubbler again. lol we should have some kinda friendly competition:devil1:

:DMan Nice I/o work progression is looking dope!!! love to see what comes outta other peoples minds!! Bubblers can be tricky i think my biggest problems are the bowl/stem or getting it to stand proper. One thing that helped me when flatting the bottom was to use a carbon rod in the bowl to make sure it was sitting right. Hold for a few seconds and make sure you don't let it sag if it is still hot. As a newb myself i always try to remember only heat up what you need to work and only hot enough to do what you need. Keep it up man and have fun!!!:D:D

Oh also i forgot to mention but another way that i drop the stem on a bub is buy heat shrinking the stem hole before putting it in so it look kind of like a one hitter with a flare. That way your hole is set. it is a diffrent look thou depending on what you like. The only pic i have is not very good so i made a lil sketch with my dope paint skills!!!! lol:D:D:chilling:

i was rippin thru my oxy an then i found out i had my propane set wayyy too high, at like 20 psi, and then since i turned it down my oxy has lasted me a lil longer.. but maybe somethin still not right? i go thru 1-2 k tanks a week, im gettin maybe like between 20-30 hours out of each? (before was like bewteen 10 and 20) now my propane is at 3 and my oxy is at 20. when i go lower well i cant describe the flame except to say i dont like the flame wit oxy lower than 20.
anyway not tryna jack the thread lol. im excited to see this piece ur talkin bout!

Ok so here is my first horn attempt (garrick inspired) and i must say it was kinda a bitch meltin in cuz it wanted to move all over the place, but I did a brace this time from bowl to stem and I can say I finally know how to do a proper seal, I could actually melt it n puff it with out it gettin all wonkey on me. so it came out smooth n thick, n tryed a lil more shapin then i would normally do, have to try again later today

I dont have no gold so only silver fume which i put on to thick again... i need some gold cuz i like the othercolors that come wif it ...

im def not that good at pickin good color combos but oh well im sure that will come in time.

also made a few pices of jank, the one isnt to bad but it cracked 3 times in the final stages, right across the front of bowl, then the whole back inch broke off blotube n all, jsut picked it up stuck it togethre and melted teh shit outa it and it came out ok,, cant believe all teh cracks i been savin latley, even fiked the bub crack so that was good,,

the other one i was jsut over not enuf fume and was sjtu wastin my time so i just made a freebe piece heheh

Made some new ones yesterday , and I broke 2 today and got one hopefully look cool, I encased unobtanium and silver unobtanium and cad yellow, then pulled em into stringers and wraped thoes and melted all in so hopefully it looks cool well see, I love expearimentin wif all deez diff colors..

Greetings. Instead of encasing your color first I would "trail spin" your colors, UNENCASED. Then, with a wide soft flame heat the colors until they are almost melted in. Now festoon (one direction rake) or feather (two direction rake) with, I prefer 3mm clear rod but you may want to use 5mm. Seeing how its less prone to breaking. This will give a much cleaner finish while also encasing your colors at the same time.:evilLaugh
Also, when it comes to color use, consider using colors without silver in them. For instace, use GA aqua azul (446) and crayon orange (204). Spin 4 trails on a fumed tube, as thin and evenly as your able. Follow the steps I told you.
Repeat the exact same pipe 10 times in a row.
Remember, look at the reflection of light on the piece you are making. Any where the light 'bends" or "cutz" represents a deviation in structure. You want the glass to flow.
Keep it up. Your enthusiasm could take you far.

ok not to bad a night last night, made a bub for my buddy he watched the whole process, like 2 hrs n gave me 60$ cuz he was so stoked to watch and got to see how much work goes into it, i was only gona charge him 40$, so that was fun, it ended up thick ass too, weighs a 1/4 lb and stands up YAY

the one coilpot piece is a sweet color and i blew holes in it and filled with a slightly diff color then encased, I like it, all my holes came out perfect so was stoked on that and most all the shapen was to my likein

Word Crip, yeah the peace pipe is cool, I will say that i'm not a big fan of your spoons mouth pieces, have you used a brass necking tool?, I was shown how to use one at the only lessons I've taken so far and have found it to be a very handy tool for mouth pieces and other things, the bubs sweet :)

first blow in was a bust, piece came out but i didnt get that cool fume effect i must not have fumed enuf or burnt it out or somethin, i got the bubbles in there but thats it, and my bloin didnt coat the while cup so i got some clear in there,

made a few earings for my hommie there not really pink, it was exitoc blue and the dots over it make it look blue and the rest is creamy purple, but they kinda cool, its is hard for me to get 2 the exact same gotta work on that..

WEEEEEEEEEEE So my buddy came over and built me a bench, I love it stable no wobble and perfect height so i can sit tall and rest arms good,,

so last night I was pertty jacked up, and decided to do glass, by the time i went to bed i had thought i had the crappiest night ever, i was wrong, need to be wasted mroe often.. I made some of the coolest shit yet, and the best part is it happened cuz i cracked every piece i worked on right at the end and had to melt it back together without a blo tube and they all came out sick, got crazy shapes from tryin to save stuff heheh,,

i made like 3 more teh other day but forgot to take pics and they sold that morning, and i really liked it, lined necks with unobtanium bowls, looked sick

now i rdy to start mashin glass around cuz it comes out cool when its not the same ol blown round shit, heheh

I will eventually but for now i jsut open teh window and the back door and blow it right out, smoke tests seem ok to me so, ill get my big fan set up when i can afford it.

oh ay and i was tryin some gold fuming but i must not have the right kind, i got some 18k wire from teh jewerlery shop and i got a lil green tint but didnt come out how id expect.. is 18k to low on teh scale?/

Yeah Crip, you need 22 kt. or 24 kt. Those seem to be the ones that work. And they each have their own flame they need to fume right.

Well last night was terible heheh, I made my 1st donught and it was cool till i checked the kiln this morn, it exploded and was made with all unexplanium, that stuff dont even like its self, i thought i t might jsut be when encased or ISO but no even coiled it sux.. I jsut cant believe how many pices it exploded into and while i was going to get my camera it cracked more i was like DAMN
so no more of that color for me ever...

so any ways this is what it looked liek after the fact heheh , and a few of the jankies i made, I think ill try a nother donut today was kinda fun and looked coool.. any tips are apricated..

ok so heres last nights,

having trouble getting my ambers to come out transparednt i always get to much buildup on the surface and i cant seem to melt it off. I think im using a oxy flame hissin like a bad dog short blue candels 22# oxy 2.5 propane so I dont knwo i need help.. Im jsut coiling it up and blowin it out but as you can see i only got the bowl and botom bubble to gome out the way i wanted on the satemless you can see what im talkin bout on teh mouth piece and bowl of the other.

irratating me cuz i love the ambers looks but i jsut cant seem to get em..

Ya ok so last night i pulled off my first tube pull, rod encased half clear so i wouldnt waste color if i jacked it up, started it on 38x4 like 5 inches and lined it thick and coated in 8mm, i know its not alot but it should get me at least 3-4 rballs

i got my rollers from my hommie at taylor rentals i jsut bought the bearings for 12$ and he made the rest for a bub n pipe, good trade

the blast shield i made is kinda weird, it works good but kinda hard to work around so im sure i wont use it much unless im doin them tube pulls it worked great for that last night, jsut keepin the heat off my face, other than that kinda in the way, glad i jsut made one instead of buyin one, for most of the stuff i do ill never use it..

so plans for the tube are gona be some of them shields BigSky jsut did the tut on. I got to try it looks sick well see how it turns out..

Man I have the same issue on my 8m...from what I am told the flame is just naturally too reducing.

I can get them to come out nice on anything solid, even as a backing on a pendant so I dont know if its the torch or me when it comes to hollow work.

i finally dleved my first cobat tube, did the spikes and fumed it, probally need more but off a 3 inch piece sleved with 38x4 i got 2 nice pices, so next time i think ill jsut make a bigger one and have a lot, that was the eaisest color tube i have made yet..

Lookin good man...heat that sleeved tube up ssslllooow when you go back to use it...they like to crack/explode especially around the air bubbles.

Also if it's your first blue tube...try messin with some fume and dots or wrap 'n rake people love em and it's easy quick stuff.

Thx guys thx, still encasements not blowin ins, still having trouble blowin in, and the disco is coil potted and stretched into the neck, as for the tube im using 26x4 blue and 38x4 to sleeve it, i ordered 32 x 4 and it was just too small so i had to wait till i got the 38 fit in super easy and melted in nice..

ya i paid 150$ for my torch and kiln, had to do some repairs n shti but was wll worth it,

and why does everyone think my torch is so small, hehehe i never even whipped it out, it does have a sm21 on the bottom and a ryder on top, so that cost me more than the original setup like 200$ more but well worth it to have a big burner on the bottom it comes in hela handy, cant wait to try a big torch someday, i might really like it.. but i get hot in front of my lil torch so i dont know if ill ever be going tooo big

Humm well, I put the stem in the can and push the bowl so that hole is already in there, then i blow the hole for the attachment spot for the mouth piece and flair it to the right size, then i punty up to it and pull off the blow tube end and its ready to attach, after its attached and the seal is good ill blow the carb hole and decorate,

I just got done with 2 days of marbling with RichSanta and it was cool as hell, had a good time and made my first big marbles and there big i was stoked, im not gonna put any pics up yet cuz rich took pics and has a better camera so ill just wait,

but they came out really good i think, well have to wait till later to seee..

haven't torched so much in in my life, actually almost emptied a tank and a half..

now im gona take a break till later

here is what i did last night, not to good not to bad but,

I just cant get my amber purples to come out purple no matter what, I have the flame hissing, I try to pin point it on the color n urn off the haze it just wont go,

Is there a trick you guys know that could help me cuz I hate the way they look always reduced, Im even working it like 10 in out in the flame tried everything still cant get the good color unless its a solid piece of the color...

oh ya and all my gold dots seem to have burnt out of the clear piece so that was a waste of time

oh well im going to go try some more in a bit so well see if i can make something better..

im just in awe i dont know how the fuck you guys do it. whenever i try i cant get it as thick or as colorful. im still lost on how to do reversals and how you guys COMPLETELY encase the inside with color like in the stemless above. i am in awe,

Chad the stemless above is outside color striped onto a tube. And the middle section is raked.

Crip looking good mang, for the amber puprle, just try and take a rod and burn off the tip until it gets clear, that will show you what it take to burn off the haze. Then to strike it, use a neutral flame to oxydizing flame. If you use a reducing flame it will turn all milky and ugly looking.

Really coming along nice Crip. What kind of torch are you working on? Just curious. That stemless is pretty bad ass.

As for the necking tool - are you necking it down then snapping it off or blowing out a thin spot and flame cutting? I've been trying to use my disc nippers like cosmo does in his w/r tut but I keep breaking out chunks and having to wipe off the mess. They just don't seem to want to cut the shit even when I pull it out really thin with the intention of reducing it back down to thicken it back up.

Chad, spend a lot of time reading here and watching youtube vids. There are also a couple good tut's over at glasspipes.org Takes a while, but you'll start to see things more clearly as you begin piecing it all together. Torch time is the best tutor aside from an actual teacher on a torch. Keep plugging away and pissing away money on glass and it'll come to you. thx guys, n ya chad the orange n blue is just fumed then striped with color then clear in between,


ya and i have been pulling them thin and just snapping it off n reducing it back also

but now i made one of the scissor jack tools and it makes a nice jack line you dont have to thin it out, it worked good to make a dent and i kept running the grove to cool the glass more then whacked it on the torch and it snapped clean and thick a nice 2 to 3 mil thick wall perfect snap i like it..

Must be the stress caused by the angles that makes it so easy to snap off. Imma hafta make me a set of them things. Looks like just a plain jane set of shears on a wooden block, eh? Easy enough...

yup super easy enuf, and it the stress caused by the cooler metal on the glass and the line your putting in it , i just suck a lil more heat out by running it up the blade still spinning it, till its cool er then snap it, only tried it 3 times so far but all 3 went well..

Got a baron marble mold yesterday - finally shoulda got one long time ago, oh its awesome I love it already..

it was suposta be red dots with black shafts but it didnt come out that way, only got the red to implode, maybe i need just a pin point of red then bigger dot of black on the back of it??

well when u encase the outside do u just heat it up and puff out then sink it back in to make it smooth? but still amazing as balls. so when u make a thick as spoon what thickness of glass do u use? and finally i only have enough to buy a bobcat and i know ill only be able to do small spoons and chillums but i guess im just lost on the technique on how to make them like super thick. like certain chillums have some sick thickness, cud someone point me in the direction of a decent tut? thnx

alright so I did some testr work last night ACME colors, and i like em

used the purple without a label, yellow, and trillium white,

I striped a cobalt tube then encased, they were a lol bubbly going on even working back in the flame,

but they all came out lookin good when finished and i worked on this for over 2hrs,, in and out of kiln, cracked like 5 times but got it together,,

only thing about the purple is it thins out alot over clear rod, thats what i used for horns same colors but i should have used a cobalt center instead of clear,,

kinda curious about those statements. Did you like them because they were free? I mean if your doing a purchase would u buy those colors again over NS,GA , Momka? Been hearing kudos from a few people but the pieces we got had so many stones in them and bubbled like crazy that I am seriously confused.

ya basically i liked em cus they didnt bubble that much, jsut while i was applicating, the yellow was teh best yellow i have used yet, as far as bubblin goes,

and ya id buy some, but i usually buy seconds or what i can get cheapest so I may not unless theres a sale, i still got a shit load of yellow seconds NS, they bubble madly, but then again im just learning more every day so i think im just finally learning the whole flame thing, and how to keep color from gettin to jacked up..

i still love momka multi rods and NS GA pertty much everything i use has been good xcept for greens, i still hate em

oh ya and my cracking was just from me trying to do a big encasment on a lil torch, forgettin to go re heat ya know..

lookin real nice crip. with the AP, you gotta blast the haze off. then you can flame strike ot kiln strike. the flame strike works best, imo. but you can get the same effect both ways.

ok so i might have just figured out the oxy flame last night, maybe but so what i did was just turned up the oxy till the flame was almost blowing out then just a hair back,

that should be oxy flame right??

burnt off the haze real nice n easy but still haven't tried it on a hollow piece yet , but the rods are coming out nice

that sound like a good way to get oxy flame?

yeah, you got it mang. 8m is a naturally reducing torch so you really have to bump the o2. that'll solve a lot of problems for you.

alrighty guys i got some questions and seeing as u guys are like all knowing about glass i need some help. today i made my first AMAZING spoon that im really proud of i really like it and i used a "stick stack" method to make it and its cool but... i still am lost on certain things. okay so one of the pics i attached is of a swirly green chillum that i saw of gp.org so i was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a video that illustrates how to do this. i realize that its a reversal but im still oober lost on how to do them and ive learned pretty much everything from videos on the net. also the second chillum i was wondering how to make it really thick right under the bowl. how do u do that the chillums ive made only come out as a rod with a bowl pushed in to the end any ideas on how to do that? so im on a mini cc for the moment and chillums and small small spoons are like the maxium that i can do at the moment. i was just wondering how these are done so i can start rocking out some mad chillums. also when making a chillum like the non swirly green one what thickness of tubing would u use?

oh well i got 1 week to make a good set of shot glasses for my buddys wedding. I should figure it out by then,, i hope

at least the amber purp is startin to come out right..

Are you using the china black tubing for those? I've got a couple small sections, tried making a spoon blow-in with it last night but it kept busting REALLY easily. Two attempts, one almost completed but... :bangHead:

I still cant get the fumed blo ins to looks good, i even fumed the hell outa the blank this time and still no coolness,

then it broke so i tried to salvage and dropped the whole mouth piece on the floor after it hit my leg n melted my shorts, but it didnt break, so it all went together,

made some hooka parts too that kinda matched the theme way to thick though

That shroom bowl is pretty kick ass Crip.

Not sure wuthappon'd with your black blow ins. Put a pic of the black crack in the pics forum somewhere. I kept having a hard time getting the fume to take to the clear glass. Seemed to take forever then it's too much. Turned the oxy on my con down and took it into a fairly reducing flame and it finally started to show. Had to get it almost dark golden looking before I hit it with a good oxy flame to strike it up a bit. It was pretty darn thick on there but it gave a pretty decent effect. Also - the black was all mucky looking by the time I blew it in. Don't know if that helps it or not as I don't know much of anything other than the flame is ripping hot yet. Catchin' on...

Did you fume then w/r the stem on the black bowl one? Pretty cool lookin'.

Ya that lil guy was actually just a momka rod spun on, "tried to spin" on more like chunked it on and spun a lil but gettn better at it.

the mouth piece of the black head is spun on blue amber purple then raked no fume,,

as for the black mucky i was getting that too, till i really started raging the oxy that helped that out..

ya my fuming is always shady, sometimes good sometimes it just never shows up kinda weird

which momkas? i thought it was some sort of cane. if you want to use that black tubing up, you cane fume it and w/r it too. the only w/r i really do are colored tubing and fume. just jet the whole thing fumed good with a nice metallic sheen, and w/r with clear .i usually do it in blotches of silver and gold, so some places are just silver, some just gold, and combinations of one over the other. it gives a ton of different colors, i like to twist my rakes when i do these too. you can also fume it half & half length wise or side by side. either way they all look good. i thought it was a cool spin on the whole wrap and rake thing.. anyways

lastnights crap , the mib came out good but the implosion lost detail on the initials so that kinda jacked and half of the dots that were suposta be liek a trans purple just disappeared

wheee tryed my first Dom skull lock last night, didnt want to waste color so i just used blue tube and some cobalt for the face stuff wif a lil fume , i think ill try some more later it was a lil easier than i thought.., still took me better part of 1 1/2 hrs, i was happy

hey crip when i do my blowins i dont even make any indentions. not dogging that way i just personally like the look of it better. when you dont leave indentions it just traps reall tiny air pockets and makes for some great lightning. anyways your stuff is looking great man.

also how hot you have your point decides how well it sticks, ie, how many and how big your bubbles are. it takes some practice but easy once you get it.

Yea there is prolly like 20 different ways to do a blow in. That why I love the tech.

Try coiling jet black, fume the blank with gold, and roll the black in some amber purp powder. Then get it ripping hot in the front(this way you get some natural bubbles too)
