I'd say grits differ depending on whether ya want a smooth finish or ya want to cut deep into the glass.

50 lb bag.

Use the heavyer grit, because the silica will break down as you use it. If you buy the fine grit you won't get much life out of it just a lot of dust.

i prefer aluminum oxide myself. what grit you get depends on what you want to do? are you going to do alot of graal and other carving techs? if so go with the heavier grit. i use it more for a finish myself so i like to go with 220 grit. the 220 works fine in my experiance when doing lite carving also. one 50 lb bag will last me a yr or two,and i use it weekly. good luck enjoy peace brett

We use 180 silicon carbide. it breaks down to 220, and is really nice for all around use and fire polishes easily. i found it locally for around 1.15 a lb. silicon carbide is sharper granules so it cuts better than aluminum oxide and lats longer, because even as it breaks down it stays sharp rather than the alum which gets dull.

I use no.1 crushed silica. It's fine enough to do thin lines and hard enough to last a long long time. Look for a sand supplier in your area. They usually sell everything from playground sand to decorative gravel. A 100lb. bag in my area costs about $5.
