looking for a used barracuda. Anyone got one??????
Are you switching from a red max to a cuda. Don't buy a new one as for the price is really up on them and I heard some places charge extra for the base. I would guess that you have a friend that needs a torch as this is kinda a lateral move and from your post I had you pegged for our next member of the Gtt revolution.
well...I recently dropped down from a red max to a natty. Now I'm looking for something around the 4-500 range. I'd rather have a barracuda than another red max. And of course i'll join the gtt revolution just as soon as i can save up the cash. My dream torch right now is a mirage.
I noticed someone posted a thread for a used barracuda for around 500. i tryed getting in touch with him numerous times but no response. oh well.
Personally i've never used a barracuda but i really like the centerfire(un like the red max) and the outer seems more powerful than the red max. Not sure about that though.
I've been using a barracuda for the last year or two, my buddy uses a red max. The max has a significantly bigger flame and can effectively work larger tube than a barracuda. 50mm stick stacks for example are really too much for a cuda to handle, but no problem for a max. The cuda is still a great mid-size torch, and the inner/outer flame is easier to work with than the over/under Nortel. I think its also a little more versatile with many good "in-between" flame sizes, whereas the max flame is pretty much either huge or tiny. The beth can probably handle anything you're likely to need it to do during your first year or two, but don't expect it to go quite as big.
yep its true people baby red max's and act like they can't melt shit when the truth is they can fucking rage for there size and type and price.
hey guys a little off topic but im lookin to buy a max but cant decide if i should go with a premix or surface mix. i mostly do boro, but occasionaly ill do some soft glass beads. i like the pinpoint flame of the premix but its effin noisy. and i like the bigger flame of the surface mix.
any suggestions?
The grass is always greener on the other side when it comes to that one, folks are 50/50. Although for me it was a surface mix top and a natty for the pre mix due to them being so cheap second hand! If you work soft glass minor's are very popular.
yeah so ive heard. i dont do A LOT of soft glass but im starting to do beads a bit more.
is the premix really just good for detailed work or can it be use for things like imploding pendants?
and where would i find a foot petal and how much are they?
The nice thing about the premix version of the red max is you can put pretty much any size National tip on there you want, which makes it much more versatile in terms of flame sizes. A 12 hole hush tip is a good all-around choice, but you could have a variety of sizes for different jobs. Some people prefer premixes for fuming too, but its definitely louder.
o thanks a lot for that info!
So a barracuda cant rage as much as a Max? I've raged a max plenty o' times. Well ...i'll keep asking around. I might just end up buying a new red max again.
oh...nd i recomend the surface mix for the top mount. i've never liked the pre-mix flame for my colors. I like to flucuate between oxidized, nuetral and reduced flames very often.
Get a used CC. Look around you can find one for $500. About 3 years ago I got a CC off Ebay for $250. It looked like it got ran over by a truck but after a little work, it still runs great.
I would love to have a cc as a back up I would do work on it for sure it would be a nice thing to have! I have been half ass watching for a cc.
CC's can get a pointpoint flame as well correct?
but theyre oxyhogs, so ive heard
yes. pre-mix centerfire though.
If i had a $600 budget for a setup i'd get a gtt cheetah. If you needed a super pinner flame you have a variety of torches in the $100-200 range you could pick up as well.
Carlisles can consume a lot of oxy if you run them in a manner that does. But you have to be raging them and or running highly oxidizing flames for this to happen! I think the problem is that most people crank them up when they don't need to, they get plenty hot enough without doing so!
I have a Beth PM2D and a CC+ (twice as many ports as a CC) and the Beth consumes more oxy (and is over all a smaller flame) for me because I have to turn it up more to get the shoulder width out of my flame and the centerfire on a beth seems to consume more oxy than a Carlisle for me.
In my opinion a CC will use slightly more oxy or the same as a Barracuda for the majority of applications (but get the jobs done faster). The times that it will consume much more, are when you are doing things with it that you can not do with a Barracuda.
For the price range a CC demolishes a Barracuda IMO.
Just another glass blowers .02 :D
thanks frankie.
yeah im still thinkin the redmax is going to have to be my next stepup because of the price. dont want this dam bobcat anymore!!
