threaded tubing for cabinet knobs
so i wanted to take my lampwork in another direction and try and make a bunch of cabinet knob designs. my thought process on this is to make the knobs like a pendant w/ a marble mold and no loop obviously. Then I was going to make the sleeve part by coiling color over the front tip of a fat mandrel w/ bead release on it leaving the front part slightly solid and then coil the color about and inch and a half or so down the mandrel. I would marver this round and smooth and weld on the knob part then anneal. after cooling in the kiln I would remove the knob and sleeve from the mandrel and gringd the other end of the sleeve (that would join against the wood of the cabinet) flat and flush. now there should be a hole where the mandrel was, I need to find some sort of small diameter tubing (brass, steel, whatever) that is threaded on the inside that I can cut and epoxy into the sleeve to accept the machine screw from the other side (thus securing the decorative knob on the cabinet door). I went to home depot w/ no success and figured maybe someone here might no where to find this stuff. Next week I'm going to visit a machine/engineering shop to see if they might know where to get this female threaded tubing. Also, what should I use for 1/4 mandrels? any help/ advise would be great. thanks
Re: threaded tubing for cabinet knobs

Yup, I wrote it. :D
Shameless plug
There's some examples of what I've been up to here:

You've got the basic idea down, I'd be interested if you find the tubing you had in mind though.
Kalera Stratton had a neat design for one that you put the screw all the way through so that you can see the head of it on the face. Very retro looking.
Re: threaded tubing for cabinet knobs
Why don't you find the size tubing you need and thread it yourself? Tap and die sets are less than $20
Re: threaded tubing for cabinet knobs
why not just use threaded inserts, even t-nuts might work OK.

These would be great:

For assembly: thread a screw in a few threads shy of all the way, fill the few threads at the end with grease so epoxy doesn't get in there, and epoxy them in the hollow cavity. Make sure to beforehand blast or sand out the cavity then clean with alcohol and let dry.
Re: threaded tubing for cabinet knobs
By the way....if I weren't being sued I'd just spill whatever extra's in my tutorial here :)
Do a search on threaded inserts on here and you'll find a couple of sources.
I just didn't want to sound pretentious.

Re: threaded tubing for cabinet knobs
William Fludgate can make threaded tube to accept a glass nut. his skills with clear glass are 2nd to none.
personally I think its overkill and think Mentys tech is solid and its worth buyign the tut just for his resources information, although he linked me the infor before he started selling the tut :D
Alien yup some lassie is taking half of Lampwork ect to court.

So sorry. I didn't realize you were on her "list" Menty.
Re: threaded tubing for cabinet knobs
I was wondering this just a couple days ago for a few similar projects.
Re: threaded tubing for cabinet knobs
I have tubing that is threaded on the outside and plastic caps that match those threads. I have seen people use these GL threads by hollowing the back of a marble and gluing the cap inside of it.
Re: threaded tubing for cabinet knobs
It all (this country) started down hill when that dumb bitch spilled hot coffee on her sourpuss and took it to an attorney who should have laughed her out the window, but instead took it to court. And the judge should have laughed them outta the Courtroom. But nope. That's was the begining of the Pussification of America.
So sorry you're inovled, Tom. As far as I've seen you're a super nice guy. I'll be buying the tut. Good luck. If you don't mind? What's she suing for? Did she cut herself on someones work?
Re: threaded tubing for cabinet knobs
well you'all, thanks for the advise and the inside info is flying a bit over my head, haven't been on LE in some time. Will likely purchase the tut Menty but since were neighbors and all maybe we could just hook up sometime (although I dont want to step on anyones toes in this market) but beantown is pretty vast and there aren't too many lampers out this way. got to think this through a little more, many solutions to one question

Re: threaded tubing for cabinet knobs
No worries, it's a big state :)
Don't forget you need to provide the screws for the knobs too, so make sure you get a matching one.
Re: threaded tubing for cabinet knobs
not that big compared to most of them. thanks for all the help truly.
Re: threaded tubing for cabinet knobs
Ok, I just read about the Lampwork Etc. Debacle. I feel bad for alla y'all....
don't do what I would do and nail her to her bedroom wall Jesus style and burn her house down. Only I get away with stuff like that. Comes in the package when ya sell your soul.
I wonder if she's related to Tony from Goodstash.

Did you read it on LWE? Or from a legal doc? If you read it from the forum, what's the link?
