Beginner looking for scrap glass!
Hi! ApeironCreations here,
I'm a brand new member to the forums and I've already gotten so much help from you guys! After quite a bit of research and procrastination I decided on a Bobcat from GTT, It seems like most of you here have problems with them on ordering their more expensive torches but I ordered my cat about 4 days ago and if UPS is even somewhat accurate on delivery they should be here today!
Though I don't have my bench set up quite yet it should be done within a few days, my fathers a fabricator of sorts and he's probably just about done with it. I was just wondering if there were any generous souls here that might have a few old scraps of glass/bunty sticks or even old tools that I might be able to buy trade or even get for free. Anything and everything would help me out at this point. I've got some scientific glass vials that I may be able to work (unless there is a problem with that?) but that's just about it. I just want to get started as soon as possible with everything ^_^
I really look forward to participating more here on the forums and posting my work as it comes into existence!

Re: Beginner looking for scrap glass!
Yeah. I'm a bit confused....
Re: Beginner looking for scrap glass!
All I could think of is a bum on the side of the road with a sign holding "Will trade _ _ _ for spare boro" .... Good luck but you've got to realize NONE of the stuff your asking for is cheap. You'll probably spend ~300-400+ on tools ~ 500+ on clear alone then color is a whole nother ball game

That's just... wrong. You can make $100-200 of clear last a long time if you're just a hobbyist (which he clearly is), and you don't need more than a paddle for a tool to get started making pendants. I got started with a $150 bundle of clear/color shorts that apixdesign sent me, and it took me a good while to go through all the clear. I still have lots of the color.
Apeiron: Where are you located? It's doubtful that anyone other than a distributor would want to ship you just a few rods/tubes, but if someone's in your area they might be willing to drop by. I would hold off on the vials, the time it would take to attach a blowtube and to melt them down would be more expensive than just buying some tubes. Bottom line is that it's hard enough to get started, so you might as well make it simple for yourself and do it the right way.
Re: Beginner looking for scrap glass!
get a boro tubing/rod sampler from mountain glass, and get color sampler too. either GA's or NS's both come with great working tips on how to use the colors.
Re: Beginner looking for scrap glass!
Mark I am saying for a few cases but I understand your standpoint. Its been a long morning
Re: Beginner looking for scrap glass!
where are you located?
and for color, while you're still new, get 'Boroshorts'
assorted pounds of color for 13$.
Re: Beginner looking for scrap glass!
Hey man I'll tell ya what...I was just like you I didn't know anyone near by that torched....and like you I made a post asking for any help getting started...and like you I was getting flack...some lessons I've learned some of the most vocal folks giving crap are guys that used their buddies torch and tools till they learned what was going on. I was lucky and had folks help me when I started (I still consider myself a noob) and i think it's a karma thing....I did have a couple folks here help out with getting me started on boro I also found a local who was getting rid of her bead set up (glass and kiln) and bought those finally then made beads to raise money towards boro. The color pack fr 13$ is a good deal...I woud be happy to do my pay it forward and send some shorts and scrap, maybe a little dicro. It was my experience on here that made me start a swap shop for glass on facebook.....http://www.facebook.com/groups/304708892984914/...all are invited so check it out and post there as well I have met some great folks here and in the glass community...don't let a few sour grapes turn ya away. PM your addy

Re: Beginner looking for scrap glass!
There's often threads that pop up in here with people giving away their scrap.
Re: Beginner looking for scrap glass!
Other people are right, in that you will have to spend a little cash, but there are a few easy and cheap ways to start.
Color - Go to http://www.sundanceglass.com/borosil...e33-random.htm . This should be the page where you can get Northstar shorts for $13 a pound and Momkas shorts for $15 a pound. cheaper 5 pounds at a time.
Use some punties to pull all of that shit down to stringers. Or punty up to it and use it like a rod.
Clear - Go to http://www.dichroicimagery.com/produ...ducts_id=90712 . Very very cheap, this is cheaper than Asian import glass, but is American.
For other sizes in clear, go to Mountain Glass and buy Chinese clear. When I got started I spent like $200 on Chinese clear, and I still have quite a bit of it. It works, and it is price efficient for stuff you will probably mess up starting out anyway.
Re: Beginner looking for scrap glass!
http://devardiglass.com/ has 5.95 dollar a pound color. im sure its garbage but a cheap material to learn with. they have clear too.
Re: Beginner looking for scrap glass!
