seriously, dude if you can make quality glass like what appears to be in question, Then i would in person buy 250 spoons right now. But not from a stranger on the net. How about we stop cluttering up this members nice thread...
So mattypo. I went back and looked but what got rid of the haze less oxygen more reducing flame? I get that crap sometimes but it will polish out with high oxy flame.
Never mind I found that other tread
It should only take like 15 minutes to make that spoon. That is all I am saying.
Nomad, I coil pot my color and make the honeycomb then I garage it, then I take my blank and fume gold then I fume silver (the only way to get the greens and other colors). Then I wrap it with clear. I do a feather rake and melt it all in. I pop the hole in the front and add my honeycomb cap from the kiln. Melt it all in, shape and finish up. That should only take 15 minutes? Yah okay.....
Practice making it more. I used to only be able to make 1 spoon a day. Then I got so fast I could make 5 an hour. Now I am kind of slow.. but still 15 minutes is a long time to spend on a spoon. Normally I spend like 5-10 minutes. Not including the honey comb end. That would take me maybe another 5-10 minutes to make. I just do wig wag reversals normally though. I don't fuck around with honey comb that much.
Could probably do it in 20 or less. I would make the fume section then pop hole and coil directly on the section then blow thin and honey comb.
That would probably save me some time but I don't think I could get these down to 15 minutes each for a while
might take a wile but I think it is doable. But now that your telling me this maybe I would say $12 each tops....
Coil pot is not as strong as clear tube. But it looks cool. So maybe you could get an extra couple of bucks for it.
The fume thing is s tuff selling point. Sometimes people can get away with talking about how you used 24 k gold fume and sterling silver fume. But most of the time they just want to know if it changes colors or not. They could give a shit what goes into it. Just make it change color bro....
I ask for like $12 for a spoon with reversal on the end and I only sold a few of them. I actually have a bunch more that no one is buying. So I might sell them for like $10 next week. Just to get rid of them. I don't think I will make more. No one wanted to really pay the extra money for the extra work and I am not going to make a production of glass where I get taken advantage of.
I'm not really following you on the coil pot is not as strong as clear tube. Can you elaborate? I have coil potted plenty of color to make tubing and that shit bounces off the pavement when I have annealed it properly. Also fuming is a novelty. I like the colors I get from fuming and I think it's worth extra. My fuming is getting better and I think it is worth more. I need to educate my customer as to why the price is what it is. The other day I sold double layer silver and gold fume pieces without ANY color for $20 wholesale to a local shop. He loved them and asked me what the selling points were. I told him exactly what I would tell someone who would be paying retail for my pieces. I worked retail for many years, it was my job to sell sell sell. We make awesome shit, then we have to sell it. Don't sell yourself short, I am more confident in my sales every time I step into a shop whether I have sold to them before or they are a potential new customer. I think you need some new customers Nomad....

I am so busy right now I am turning people down......
The coil pot is not the same thickness all the way through. No matter how hard you try and tell me that it is I find it hard to believe.
I have also had coil pots brake on me after people spent a lot of money and spent a lot of care in transporting the glass through customs to Jamaica. Then the guys just broke the piece once they got it and the other pieces are just fine.
Look man it is up to you what you do. If you can get more money and your busy then do it. Go for it! That is all I am saying.
i can get coil pots to even out fine same as a reversal section. that picture quality is awesome presenting your pieces in a higher manner will for sure help you get a better price somethings worth as much the customers are willing to pay for it and those honeycombs are super popular right now over standard wrap rake. that fume is very nice i couldnt seeing doing this 15 even if thats the only piece you make
Really nice pictures, I think that makes a big difference if you are doing sales online, or even by your phone. Are those done in some kind of lightbox or lasso'd in photoshop onto a black background? Or both
Sorry to clutter your thread, but I have to disagree with you nomad. I don't see any reason that coil pots can't be as strong as tubing (especially china tube). A lot of my work is coil pots. When I first started some spots would be much thinner than others, and not a very straight cylinder most of the time. If would take me a lot of puffing and condensing to get it nice and even. Now I'm better at laying it down evenly throughout the entire coil and it takes much less to even out the walls. I don't have any issue with it breaking so far.
Some colors certainly aren't ideal for coiling, but for most I think it works really well. I don't think you should write the technique off completely. Just try to lay it down more evenly, and puff and condense until it is as even as your tube.
Thanks jxbey and itssteve! I used a lightbox with black non reflective fabric. In photoshop I did the smart selection tool and then refine edge. Then I replaced the background with a more even black. Only took a few minutes. Of like to make more of these today but it's so damn cold, can't wait for it to warm up

So guys I am getting kicked out of my current studio by my crazy landlord. I swear he is schizophrenic. Anyway....I have been under pressure to find a spot quick and I think I just found my dream spot. Check it out! Fun fact this used to be Nantucket Nectars testing lab. Hopefully I am moved in by saturday. :bouncy:

It has an exhaust already built in and everything mang.... sweet.
Yah Nomad that fan is a beast too it is powerful! Need to build an overhead hood with ducting and I will be good. The island is perfect, granite top. I shouldn't have to put anything down on that right? I will probably put hardi backer on the floor but the wood isnt coated in anything. Id hate to fuck it up though. Ill prob put hardi backer on the floor and mats over that so I can keep the place looking good. Hopefully I can have demos and whatnot in here. I'm very excited I hate my studio right now.
Congrats it looks awesome!
