Re: Rollcall - introduce yourself!
aloha!
here it is real quicklike--currently livin the simple life on the north shore of oahu, always knew i had to be an artist. grew up in upstate SC, got my BFA painting / printmaking in Philadelphia, graphic design to social work until i moved to hawaii. right after moving here, i got a job at an art gallery as a consultant, which developed into a 4 year formal apprenticeship sculpting sea life. paid my own way to study at pilchuck, made it to penland this past summer on work-study scholarship. studied with some amazing artists already, paul stankard, vittorio costantini. mostly boro but i love soft glass too. definitely am finding my own voice now that i have started working for myself...set up a studio in a decrepit shed (now renovated) near my house this past fall with my lynx, M15, and my good friend ben's borrowed kiln. please check my website, http://www.jessicalandau.com
i hope to update with new work within the next week...
i'm new to this site, but am already thankful for the laughs, advice, and sense of community!

haleiwa's a cool little town wish I could live there :)
Re: Rollcall - introduce yourself!
you can! it's your life, you can do whatever you want. just make it up!;)
for reals though i hope i can become useful on a site like this.
i am definitely no expert, and right now i have way more questions than answers, but i'm sure i've picked up something along the way worth passing along...
in my opinion, this free exchange of knowledge and information furthers lampworking, which, thanks in part to the borosilicate revolution, is reaching its renaissance.
by the way, a few years ago, before i was all that internet savvy, i remember seeing some artist's website who had done all of these amazing things. there i was, working a job with no real potential for advancement and this person's amazingness just depressed me. i was intimidated by my own lack of experience and too afraid / unsure of how to proceed to really gain the equipment / space / education that i lacked.
so here's what anyone can do: take risks, get used to rejection, try out for everything (competitions, exhibitions, scholarships, residencies), get used to rejection, get used to debt (i spend a lot of time at the small business administration and have learned that so few businesses turn a profit in the first coupla years!), take one step at a time, and get used to rejection. don't put just one application out there, put out four. and did i mention the rejection? it's quite humbling actually. but one day, after they've seen your name on their desk like 400 times, some adminstrator somewhere will be like oh please just give her something already so she'll shut up! and then you'll have a resume.:confetti:

Re: Rollcall - introduce yourself!
blowing glass since 01. i started out just making the mouthpieces for 5$ pankers and passing it on. straight production style. since then i've done a murrine class at penland with dinah hulet(moretti) and an encalmo workshop with matt eskuche. i've worked in multiple shops across the country and had the opportunity to work with a lot of knowledgeable people, all of whom have influenced me in some way. glass is a huge part of my life and always will be. i am proud to be a part of the glassblowing community!!

Re: Rollcall - introduce yourself!
What's up all.. Just getting around to this. been snooping around for a couple days seeing how you all rock the tubes.
Name's Beau, 29 years old been torching glass since 97' (used to braze metal at age 10)..
Started with soft-glass beads, worked at a shop with a furnace for awhile, got into blown boro and whatnot...worked for a lampworker in Truckee Ca. making hummingbirds and other generic sculptural production for a while but went back to beads about 6 years ago and have since been doing that with my GF for a living. I taught her how to make soft-g beads about 6 years ago. I did the soft-glass mandrel thing for awhile with alot of periodic blown boro bead sessions but lately that's all I do is make blown beads, occassionally I bust out some perfume bottles or vessels but beads generally are my zen.
See you around!
