I do mostly ISO fume only spoons and I'll do both tonight and show the results in pics tomorrow
Update I just got in the shop and made a fume spoon with gold first and than silver, I normally do it the other way around and I'll continue to do it silver first. I did everything exactly the same with the same reg pressures and everything. These are my prodo and I make them over and over again every day so I've gotten them down pretty well and the silver first is much more vibrant in color.
I think silver sticks quicker and easier than gold, but it's easier to lay silver on top of gold than vice versa. I think any metal already on the surface makes it easier for another metal to bond. All that being said, I pretty much always fume gold first and then add silver. Also, my experience is that when inside/encased in clear, if the gold is on top, it will stop the silver from growing out in to the clear. This explains why you get more vibrant colors when you fume silver first on IO. The silver crystal develop and spread in to the clear. When you fume gold first, nothing spreads beyond the layer of gold. I hope that makes sense. I rarely feel like my explanations do. I am much better when I can have a visual aid.
That actually made wonderful sense Aymie! Thank you. Hmk I agree on working silver cold. Misha gave me a tip to turn down the lights in the shop to help make sure it's cold enough. She also advised a thin layer of silver (invisible) first to give the gold something to stick to. I am (very) new to this and have a lot of experimenting to do! Luckily I have peeps like misha and Aymie and everyone else on this forum to help. Thanks everyone. :)
I will have to try this cold fuming thing with silver I've been getting nice blues and colors without it but I'm always interested in seeing if there's something I can do to make things better
I have pictures of combs done each way , I will post up tonight...
I think the vibrancy of the fume has a lot more to do with how you lay fume, and flame atmosphere while fuming, and throughout the rest of the process. I lay gold first in most of my ISO work, and don't feel I have a problem with vibrancy. In fact, I think the fume is more vibrant when I lay gold first, because it is easier to get the gold only where I want it, and easier to see how much of it is there. i.e. makes it a lot easier to not over fume.
This one was lots of gold before the silver.... I baked the gold on good before the silver, I did burn off the extra silver on the inside , the normal shade of nicotine color , was a wild orange the whole time instead....
Gold heavy first then silver comb... A few pics of it. You know how they look different depending on light. Lots of the pink from the gold showed up.

I have older pics of combs with silver first... But the comb from last night , was the same exact steps with silver first ( melt in , bench cool , strike one time , kiln ) it was hot last night.... Should be done today.
Little sneak peek at the sherlock I just finished. Nothing too fancy, but still one of the nicest pieces I've made in a long time. Been stuck in the prodo grind for way too long. Felt nice to sorta step away from prodo for a night. Will post better pics tomorrow once it's done doing its thing in the kiln.

Thanks guys! Jonny B, I actually do those as a tube encasement rather than a blow-in, but close enough. lol. I really gave away most of the piece in my preview, but still wanted to post better pics of it as well. Really just cropped that one the way I did to hide the point. lol. Mouthpiece is also cut off in this pic due to the way I had to crop it. I'll post a better full pic later if you guys really wanna see the mouthpiece. lol
