Hi. My name is Jake, I live in Waukesha Wisconsin,(near milwaukee) and have been out of the flame game for 5 years. 5 years ago my daughter was born and operation PW/HH ruined my business so I went into welding. Went to school the whole 9 yards. 5 years later I consider myself a top-notch welder/fitter, but have suffered a horrible back injury thanks to an asshat slave driving boss. My neurologist told me if I kept working the heavy manual labor i wouldn't be able to walk in 5 to 10 years. So I am going back to what I love. I hated what I was doing anyway. (not that ALL welding sucks, it depends what you are doing/ making) So anyway I walked out of my crap job pennyless, armed myself with a new shiny credit card and hope to be back blowing in the next few weeks. I still have my trusty old National 8M that I got from Josh Sable way back when (you out there bro?) my old humongous homemade kiln, and am in the market for a Oxy-gen and maybe a new (or used) kiln. That being said I want to give a shout out to all the old members from the old EZboard glass pipemakers group. I recognize a few of you. (Eugene Rain i recognized you right away, smutboy, generations and a few others i forget now.) After I stopped blowing I got real depressed and stopped going into the forum, it made me more depressed. But thats all history now. In short im happy to be here and look forward to the future! Chat at ya'll later!
:DHello!!!!
I have been lurking here for a hot minute. I have learned alot from all the information here, I am eager to start posting and hope that I can help out in some way. I hope to post some of my work soon. Is there a way I could post a .pdf file? It is a slideshow with some work of mine that can be opened with adobe acrobat reader.
Oh yeah. Im going on 5 years torching. I run a Carlisle CC and have never tried a triple mix burner. Although Im still struggling to raise the funds, I am dying to make it to AGI this year!!!! I hope there's still room!!!!!
Thanks to everyone for all the positivity and helpfull attitudes I have witnessed on this forum! Even if it wasn't directed at me, It is great to see experienced lampworkers taking the time to explain simple concepts to NOOBS, thus in the longrun saving many beginners much frustration!!!!
I stubbernly taught myself for years, and might have been able to learn many things quicker had I the ability to learn from someone, or a means of communicating, such as this forum, with other experienced lampworkers! To this date, I have only met one other serious lampworker, and have never worked on any collabrative type project with anyone. Maybe this explains some of my desire to make it to AGI!!!!
:D
greetings! my name is daric. started on pipes in 1995. now doing all kinds of stuff. currently located in southern oregon.
Hi Susan,
If they are sticking to the mandrel, your bead release may not be thick enough, or may have cracked and you didn't notice it. If your bead is cracking from hole to hole, it is a heat issue-you kept the bead too cool. If there are other types of cracking, it's probably a glass compatibility issue.
Hope this helps!

Hey my name is Cory, and I have had a small affinity for glass and collected many tubes and works of art. I now am interested in moving more in the direction of learning how to create my own functional works of art as well. If anyone could point me in the direction of where to take my first step that would be great, I am now living in Bristol, CT in search of a teacher. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah and I found this place from a post by N3RD on tokecity.com
Thanks Guys
Hey there.. its Maren. I have been checking this forum out for a while.. I want to say that this may be one of the best resources I have found... Ive been a member for a few months, but this is the first time I have had a minute to post...
um... a bit about me: My name is Maren (like mah-wren). Ive been on the torch for a little less than three years... the whole time working full time to support myself..(and barely working on the torch at all) Im from outside of Detroit, but I've been on the bay for about 4 years. No complaints (no big earth-quakes yet, either). I was on the outerlimits of torchin for a bit-- didn't even know that forums like this existed-- or that there were so many people out there doing this for a living-- I was working at the Bead and Rock Shop in Berkeley, CA (retail clerk, managing, in-house beadmaker) where the owner had decided that I was only going to use moretti (its what he had literally TONS of; and his studio, his glass his gas, I had to do what the man wanted). I hated it. It kept exploding and I was finding chunks of glass in my dreads. I knew that boro was where it was at, and where I wanted to be.. so I saved up and got a little minor burner, my own kiln, a few K tanks, and a vent fan... I don't think Ive touched moretti since I set up my first studio set up in my house. A few years later I met a dude who worked for Revere Glass.. I ended up meeting Dustin a few days later.. we met, talked, and then he asked me to come work for him. Basically he swooped me up to work for him. I did that for about eight months (secretary, office manager, gopher). At the end of May this year, I set out on my own (no more running or trying to run someone elses business, time to work for myself!).
In my time at Revere, I learned a lot from the workshops that I got to peek in at, and I was able to meet some amazing artists and teachers and members of the glass community. It really opened up my eyes to what was possible and how high the bar really is... What I learned is that the only way that I am going to be a good glassblower is to actually blow glass, not run someone elses glass-blowing business. When I realized that I had let my art lag to work for another artist (among other things) I set out on my own.
It is hard work to make it, but egypt wasn't built in a day; and Im laying the foundation bricks right now.
To whoever made this forum happen-- THANK YOU!!!!!
I look forward to being a part of your community.:chilling::blowkiss::bouncy:
