This was my very first thought about this whole project about three months ago and may end up being what happens!
But Like I said I dont have the expertese to cut the hole and no camper place will do it. I got responses like straight up "no" and "we dont really like to cut holes in the side on RV's" I think there may be more to having a window than jsut having a hole. Like it needs to be supported or something.

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
here is smoke bomb test two~ with some make shift sides on that board, seems to work better but still not good enough. the excess smoke seems to shoot out the open sides so I feel like If I can trap it all in It would work ok. Im curious if jsut boxing this fan in better would help. Prol what I will try first since will be kinda minor construction compared to the hole in side of camper and installing the fan there.

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
also would love to see some working ventilation smoke bomb tests so I can compare !

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
If you could build a box and duct the fan to the top of the box that'd probably work. The issue you'll have with that though is you probably wouldn't be able to fold up your workbench.

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
I think I still could as long as hood hangs no lower than bottom of cabinets :) Im actually in a constant saftey break ;) staring at this and thinking right now!
-
Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
Could you make removable walls that extend the hood down to the top of the actual bench? You want it to be as contained as possible.

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
but the hole in side of camper starting to seem best again, but thats prol just me not wanting to take the time to figure this out, Im an obstacle avoider sometimes, but this just needs tackled and beat into submission. maybe a walk through a homedepot would help?

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
the spot the fan is in now is crappy I agree and not sure If ducting a attic fan is good. the cabinets are def in the way. Im jsut worried i will spend alot of time building this enclosed hood and piecing it all together and it still wont work well. Dont have the time for that kind of fail again. what type of place would you call to have a hole cut in RV wall, lol or does anyone have any tips on doin it yourself.

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
I mean check out the wall. What material is it? Are there any support beams or anything running through? Should be as simple as a sawzall but I've never cut into an RV before..
-
Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
think sawzall is not the right tool, you need like a real good saw that can cut cirlces and with a precise smooth cut. Still would love to hear ideas not Involving cutting hole in wall as well
but here is an old post from my mobile shop thread
I asked about installin fan in wall on RV site and a guy told me this and Kinda sounds doable since and I believe my walls are the metal frame walls, not sure why RV places dont wanna do it for me but hmmm..... decisions, decisions............ wanna hera yalls opinion on what you would do if in this situatuon. the board idea metioned above sounds easiest and cheapest @ this point but Im still open to suggestions and seriously consodering this option, but Im also in a Time crunch, all ready moved back depature and not wanting to do that again. Got One week, and this is only one of a million things im tryin to do this week lol......stressin out and my brain not functioning as well cuz of it I think........ thanks yall

There is no standard construction for sidewalls, so it's a crap shoot. If your trailer has a metal frame, there are probably large gaps between the vertical supports and the open areas between are just two skins with foam insulation between. No problem to cut a hole, unless a piece of square metal tubing just happens to be in the way. If wood frames, the studs are probably closer, but still not 16" centers like a house. And wood studs can be cut if needed.
You need to tap the walls to try to locate where the uprights are and gingerly cut out between them. I'd start with a smallish drilled hole so I could get a look/feel inside before expanding the hole to fan size.
Obviously the exterior has to be sealed. Any good RV caulk should do the job - I'd probably choose ProFlex RV in the clear formula for the exposed edges. If you need a sealer to sandwich between the fans outer flange (it does have one, I hope?) and the sidewall, the butyl (or similar) tape sold in mobile home shops and some hardware & lumber stores is good. Sometimes it is known as window seal tape or putty tape. And sometimes colloquially as "monkey poop" or similar graphic names.

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
A sawzall can and will do the job right if you have the right blade.
The next best thing would be a jigsaw, with the right blade.
I'm not suggesting you do a crappy hack-job.I'm saying you can do this right.
Home Depot rents tools, not sure if they have what you need as far as blades go, so you'd probably end up buying a $10 blade.
I know it sounds sketchy, but Yes, I have considered cutting a hole in my car myself, and I WAS very hesitant at first.
If I find a sun-roof for $75 again, I'll cut that bitch myself.
Drill two holes side-by-side, insert saw blade, commit. If you scout out the area, you'll be able to miss any support beams by shifting to one side or the other.
Hope we can ease your worry about cutting your RV for your own safety.

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
after rereading the RVforum thread I made Im startig to feel confident about it. And I think If and when, if ever we do get rid if this I can also install a window since I will feel more confident with doin so. Is my 1350cfm attic fan good enough or Do I need a bigger Fan? and do most people agree that this is best option. I would still have all my storage, and building hood will elimate cabinets and hooks on ceiling that bikes hang from while traveling. and even if I build hood the fan is still placed in a crappy spot.

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
I agree!
But now Im worried about the wall idea becaue someone who has been living in Rv's blowing glass told me that most nice RV parks will instantly reject me if I have fan in wall like that. Not sure why though :(

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
Im a big fan of fan in wall right now but they suggested I do this but not sure exactly what they are describing~
Fan in wall of rv instantly gets you rejected from most nice rv parks...
Incognito is best...
There is a 2000+cfm inline at target online for a smokin deal...
Vent out floor... Run hollow wall at 2-3 depth f...or getting all cfm to hood and to fireproof/hypercool wall...use hardibacker for wall.
In rv... That kinda flow will be super overkill... So put fan controller for dining room fan for days your not needing that flow...Put fan directly up-down on hole under bench so you only need ducting to hollow wall and not for exhaust... Will reduce loss from "static pressure"... I got what I described in a trailer, and it was in the back room of an rv before that... Always using a fan on floor with hole in floor with duct to wall 2-3 inches off backwall(hollow and sealed to vent hood) to get air from hood...
~ but still with this set up I loose my cabinets and my bicylce storage and not sure how it would work with table folding up so bikes could get in.

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
this is the reason I guess they advised against fan in wall.~
Glassblowing is heavily frowned upon in resorts with the electrical you need... Fearmongers. No matter how nice the rv... We have a nice 38 foot coach with basement and brand new toy trailer... They just don't accept your rent if they find ...your flameworking more often than not... Rvs are made of firewood, and they don't want ya burnin down the park... Just be low-key.
And ya... Hollow wall beats fan in wall any day... Not flaming your fan motor is good, not having outside wind directly at your fan change the flow is great!...
Hang the bikes on the ladder? ... Frontbumper hitch rack for bikes?...

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
Makes sense.. Did that guy say he has an RV with a freaking basement??? I don't really follow the hollow wall thing but venting out the floor may work. I'd make sure there was like a 90 degree turn under the rv so the heated gases don't try to rise back up into the RV

Re: smoke bomb test, I wanna hear your thoughts!!!
I guess He says hollow wall prevents heat buildup on wall in front of torch and also keeps from reducing your airflow, I guess ducting would hinder airflow. I feel like this guy knows what he's talking about and Since he has been doin what Im tryin to do for over ten years now I gotta listen to him I think!
